Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, will embark on an official visit to Australia and New Zealand starting September 9, 2026, in a trip aimed at strengthening the Indian Navy’s bilateral cooperation with both the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).
The Australia leg of the visit follows a series of high-level engagements between the two countries, including the Third India-Australia Annual Summit held in July 2026 and the Second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in June 2026. Defence and security cooperation between New Delhi and Canberra, including on maritime security and regional cooperation, has continued to deepen in recent months.
During his stay in Australia, Admiral Swaminathan is expected to hold bilateral talks with senior RAN leadership and engage with top Australian defence officials. These discussions will offer a chance to take stock of ongoing naval cooperation and look at ways to deepen operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, and training and professional exchanges between the two navies.
The Navy chief will also tour key operational and training establishments and meet with RAN personnel, with discussions expected to cover maritime capabilities, emerging technologies, and professional military education — reflecting the widening scope of the India-Australia naval relationship.
Elevated Ties with New Zealand
The New Zealand leg builds on renewed momentum in bilateral relations following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country in July 2026, during which India and New Zealand elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership and agreed to deepen cooperation across several areas, including defence and maritime security.
In New Zealand, Admiral Swaminathan will meet with senior RNZN leadership and engage with the country’s defence establishment, with talks focused on strengthening operational interaction, information sharing, and training and professional exchanges between the two navies.
He will also visit operational and training establishments in New Zealand, interacting with RNZN personnel as well as officers undergoing professional military education. The visit carries added significance coming soon after the conclusion of a Maritime Cooperation Arrangement between the two countries, which expands the practical framework for maritime collaboration.
Wider Indo-Pacific Context
Admiral Swaminathan took charge as the Indian Navy’s 27th Chief of the Naval Staff earlier this year, succeeding Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi. A specialist in communication and electronic warfare with nearly four decades of service, he has previously commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and served as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command before taking over as Navy chief.
His visit to Australia and New Zealand underscores India’s growing defence and maritime engagement in the southern Indo-Pacific and reflects the Indian Navy’s stated commitment to deepening cooperation with the RAN and RNZN through sustained, practical maritime engagement — contributing, as the Navy put it, to peace, security and stability in the wider Indo-Pacific region.
