An 18-year-old girl in Bihar’s Munger attempted self-harm after her parents refused to buy her an Apple iPhone worth ₹1.5 lakh. The girl, who had been demanding the expensive gadget for three months, locked herself in a room and slit her wrist with a blade when her request was denied.
According to media reports, the girl insisted on getting the iPhone so she could communicate with her partner, who uses the device. After the incident, she told the media, “I need an Apple phone. I don’t have any other problems, just a phone problem.”
Her mother explained that their financial situation did not allow them to afford such a costly phone. Despite this, the girl remained adamant about her demand, claiming she was unable to talk to her partner. She stated that she had previously eloped and married him.
After slashing her left wrist multiple times, the girl sustained several injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment. Physicians attending to her attested to the fact that the injuries were not severe but are being treated cautiously in order to avoid any infection or ulcer formation. She is stable and is not in any life-threatening situation.
The incident has drawn attention to the growing reliance of young people on technology and costly gadgets. It also brings attention to the emotional anguish and drastic measures taken by some people when they are deprived of materialistic needs.
After treatment, the girl promised her family that she would never try to commit such an act again. The case has highlighted the kind of pressures parents and children have in these times when social standing and communication go hand-in-hand with costly technology.
