February 17, 2019, is firmly etched in the hearts of many as a day of supreme sacrifice in which Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal gave his life to his duty, radiating the highest ideals of valor and patriotism. On his death anniversary, we kneel down to remember and pay tribute to such an indomitable spirit of a hero who gave everything for his motherland.
A Life in Service
Major Vibhuti was born on December 18, 1987, at Dehradun, Uttarakhand, as the youngest of three sisters. With a background strongly bolstered by army tradition, his father, Shri OP Dhoundiyal, and mother, Smt. Saroj Dhoundiyal, instilled the values of discipline and service into him, with the base of education laid at St. Joseph Academy, going on to graduate from DAV College in Dehradun. All of these prepared him on a very robust foundation for joining the Indian Army.
On September 18, 2011, his dream came true when he was commissioned to join the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME). His path was apostolic by separated and specialist training, all poised for any ordeal an army man is typically subjected to. From the expectations of high seams in the Krishna Ghati of Jammu and Kashmir to other verbal postings in Rajasthan, Pune, and Secunderabad, each assignment he undertook with immense devotion.
A Love That Knew No Bounds
Amid his commitments to duty, love entered Major Vibhuti’s life when he married Ms. Nitika Kaul on April 19, 2018. Their bond was a testament to strength and resilience, as Nitika stood beside him, understanding the life of a soldier—a life of devotion, sacrifice, and uncertainty.
The Ultimate Sacrifice in Pulwama
2018 marked a turning point in Major Vibhuti’s career when he was deputed to serve with the 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) Battalion in Jammu and Kashmir. Initially tasked with commanding the Field Repair Increment (FRI) of EME, he soon took over as Company Commander of Delta Company, leading counterinsurgency operations in one of the most volatile regions.
On the night of February 17, 2019, just days after the deadly Pulwama attack, Major Vibhuti and his team received intelligence about terrorist hideouts in Pinglan village. Without hesitation, he led his men into the treacherous terrain, determined to neutralize the threat. A fierce gunfight ensued, where he displayed extraordinary valor, eliminating a terrorist while sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
Even as he bled, Major Vibhuti pressed on, ensuring the success of the mission. However, a grenade thrown by the militants proved fatal, and he, along with his brave comrades—Havildar Sheo Ram, Sepoy Ajay Kumar, and Sepoy Hari Singh—succumbed to their injuries. Their sacrifice was a crucial blow to terrorism in the region, reaffirming the unwavering spirit of the Indian Army.
A Legacy That Inspires
For his supreme sacrifice, Major Vibhuti was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest gallantry awards. His legacy extends beyond medals and citations; it lives on in the hearts of his comrades, his family, and every Indian who values freedom and bravery.
In a fitting tribute to his courage, his wife, Smt. Nitika Kaul Dhoundiyal, chose to carry forward his legacy. She joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps in May 2021, symbolizing resilience and patriotism.
As we remember Major Vibhuti on his 6th death anniversary, his story continues to inspire generations. His unwavering commitment to duty, selflessness, and love for the nation serves as a beacon of courage. He was not just a soldier but a son, a husband, and above all, a true patriot whose sacrifice will never be forgotten.
