In a major jolt to the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday granted permission to Rashtriya Swayam Sewaksangh (RSS) to hold a rally in Burdwan. The RSS had moved the High court to challenge the state government after the latter denied use of the microphone at a scheduled event featuring Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat. The gathering called Jan Sabha will be conducted on the 16th of February.
Justice Amrita Sinha dismissed Mamata Banerjee govt’s argument that the use of microphone in RSS event would cause inconveniences to students in their exam preparations. Justice Sinha emphasised that since it is a Sunday and the event will last only 1 hour and 15 minutes, the court does not think that it will cause inconvenience to anyone.
The court, however, ordered that the rally should be conducted peacefully and that the organisers must ensure the sound levels are kept as low as possible to avoid causing any disturbance in students’ exam preprations.

The District Administration had earlier placed a ban on the use of microphones during this public meeting on the SAI Ground. The TMC-led government had justified its decision, citing ongoing board exams alleging that it will create disturbances in students’ preparations.
it is pertinent to note that under the regime of Mamata Banerjee government, approaching the court for normal regulatory permissions has become a norm. During peak election season, rampant political killings have brought great disrepute to the state’s image. However, the TMC regime’s excesses is not just limited to hardcore political violence, attacks on BJP, CPI(M) grassroot cadres and then giving political murders ‘suicide’ spin. But even, national leadership of prominent organisations like BJP, RSS have faced attacks, denial of permission for basic political activities and more. However, the last pillar of democracy and the most effective one at that in the state of West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court has been protecting the citizenry from the excesses of the TMC regime.
