The sacred day, the entire Hindu community from all over the world was waiting for has arrived. The Maha Kumbh festival will embark from the 13th of January and continue till the 26th of February. Maha Kumbh Mela is undoubtedly the biggest religious festival in the world and celebrated every 12 years at Prayagraj, where the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati converge. This alignment is further enriched by the occurrence of Pukh (Pushya) Nakshatra three hours before Amavasya on January 29, 2025.
Ancient scriptures narrate how, during the battle between the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) for the nectar of immortality (Amrit), four celestial beings were assigned to protect the pitcher of nectar. The Sun ensured its stability, the Moon safeguarded against spillage, Jupiter protected it from Asuras, and Shani mediated potential conflicts. This rare alignment of celestial bodies, similar to that during the mythical events, is what makes the 2025 Maha Kumbh so profoundly auspicious.
The origins of the Kumbh Mela can be traced back to the Samudra Manthan. After retrieving the Amrit Kalash, the Devas brought it to Prayag to protect it from the Asuras. At that time, the four Rishis Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan, and Sanatkumar camped at Prayag, marking the beginning of the Kumbh tradition. This year’s alignment of planets and Nakshatra resonates deeply with this foundational mythology, further elevating the spiritual significance of the event.
