The horrific ordeal of a young woman in Mumbai has sent shockwaves across the city. After being raped by an autorickshaw driver, the subsequent mental agony & self-mutilation the 20-year-old victim went through seems like an episode from some shocking crime show. The woman, a resident of Nalasopara in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, contacted authorities from Ram Mandir railway station in Goregaon and revealed that she had gone to Arnala Beach in Virar with the auto driver. Unable to secure a room in a guest house due to lack of identification, they decided to spend the night on the beach. The autorickshaw driver then raped her & fled.
This case needs deeper understanding where trauma, fear, and pressures of society intertwine for an exceedingly ugly braiding. It starts as a sexual abuse case and soon sways into complications and mental agonies. The victim was so driven that she went to the extreme of self-harm, inserting surgical blades and stones in her private parts, in fear of her parents’ opinion about the incident. After an intensive search, on Thursday night police arrested the auto driver, Raj Ratan. Meanwhile, the woman’s conflicting statements are making the Police continue their investigation into the incident.
