On Monday (20th January), the West Bengal’s Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court sentenced convict Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in the brutal rape-murder case of the 31-year old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s state-run, RG Kar Medical College. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer for West Bengal Police.
During the hearing over sentencing, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought capital punishment for the convict. The deceased victim’s father demanded the harshest penalty and vowed to continue their fight for justice.
The CBI asserted that the case comes under the “rarest of rare” category and demanded maximum punishment to the convict, that is death penalty in this case adding that it was needed to “maintain people’s faith in society”.
However, the Additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court, Anirban Das said that the case did not fall under the rarest of rare category. Consequently, he sentenced Roy to life in jail.
Furthermore, the court also fined Roy Rs 50,000. Judge Das also directed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family.
Roy was arrested the next day. Earlier, the court found him guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The RG kar rape murder case details
On 9th of August, 2024, a 31 year old female doctor was brutally murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. A man named, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested after coming out of CCTV but it is suspected that Sanjay Roy is a mere scapegoat, there are big names being involved in the rape and murder of the female doctor. It is also anticipated that there is some hidden illegal activities that run at the hospital which the female doctor would have come across which led to her rape and murder.
