A soldier’s life is a life of dedication, interspersed with brief periods of intense courage below a grim, constant reality: today could very likely be his last. For Capt. Brijesh Thapa, it was on July 15, 2024, in the unforgiving lands of Jammu and Kashmir, conducting an anti-insurgency operation. In this 27-year-old soldier, that ultimate sacrifice had been added to the long list of heroes who left their lives in the service to the nation by a lad of the motherland of Bagdogra under the Darjeeling district. The story of Captain Thapa is one of poignant sacrifices inherent in the military life and the significant impact one could make through the dedication and valor.
Born to a family of soldiers, Capt. Brijesh Thapa was almost destined to don the uniform. The grandfather and father, both veterans of the Indian Army, instilled in him a sense of patriotism and a longing to serve with deep sincerity. From a very early age, he paraded around wearing his father’s uniform with much pride and joy; any such presence remained to him a very concrete projection of the dream that resided in his heart. Such exposure from a very young age, conjoined with the ethos of military tradition, contributed richly to the growth of his outlook as well as to his resolve to take his place alongside others in his family. On completing his engineering degree, Capt Thapa’s career took a further turn with the Combined Defence Services Examination and subsequent training at the elite Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. He was commissioned into the 145 AD Regiment, the unit responsible for the critical task of guarding Indian airspace. His colleagues and superiors saw his leadership qualities, unwavering bravery, and profound commitment to his duties. Captain Thapa was not just a soldier; he was a leader, respected and admired by those who served alongside him.
His deployment to the 10 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) battalion in Jammu and Kashmir in September 2023 threw him into the heart of the fight against militancy. In very tough terrain with volatile security arrangements, the need was high there for soldiers to be on high vigil and courageous too. The area demanded the role of counterinsurgency operations from their tasking schedule, which challenged Captain Thapa and his whole unit. They were engaged as a joint force along with police from Jammu and Kashmir during an operation on July 15. The firefight here in the dense forests of Dhari Gote Urarbagi vividly brought to the fore the danger of their assignment. Capt. Thapa showed exemplary leadership, tightening the cordon aggressively despite the challenging terrain, poor visibility, and rain, and kept pushing with full determination, thus ultimately losing his own life along with three of his companions.
News of his death spread like wildfire through his hometown, Darjeeling, a city that had borne witness to his deep impact in the community. Huge crowds thronged to pay their respects to the fallen hero and mourn his loss. Heartfelt tributes and patriotic slogans that spoke of deep appreciation for the sacrifice marked the outpouring of emotion. His parents remembered, in their sorrow, their last talk with their son and, in that last conversation, a tragic reminder of the human cost war inflicted. His mother recalled him as one who held a fixed will and concentration toward his duty. His father boasted of his son because of the latter’s boldness and sense of duty. Such accounts point to the huge loss that is faced by a family because of a soldier’s loss and sacrifice, in return, in providing support to the relatives who took the service path.
A beautiful tribute was made by the friends and fellow soldiers of Capt. Brijesh Thapa as they released his favorite song, Choo Lo by Local Train, on his 28th birthday (he was born on 15th Jan 1997) which he had once requested to be sung for him. This act epitomized how bonds withstood adversities, but once again illustrates the implications of the existence of Captain Thapa in life. In fact, this was not only a payback; this was testimony of camaraderie and experiences through which one survives throughout his military careers. Had he been alive, he would have been celebrating his 28th birthday with his family, friends, and fellow officers in his unit.
The story of Captain Brijesh Thapa is an ultimate reminder of how soldiers are devoted to the cause of their country. He embodies bravery, leadership, and single-minded commitment in the best examples for the following generations. Though tragically cut short, his life has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him and on the history of the Indian Army. He had always known how unpredictable his profession could be, and thus every day of this man’s life was heavenly. Though sometimes the day he dreaded would dawn too soon, he fulfilled his promise just to be chalked up on a list of names that would resound, each in their own way, in the grateful psyche of a nation. Captain Brijesh Thapa has gone, but he cannot be forgotten. With a flicker of life and hope, his legend of service, gallantry, and patriotism shall forever remain through life and its trials and tribulations.
