The fact-finding committee was established by the NGO “Call for Justice”. It was led by notable legal and administrative experts to investigate the allegations of religious discrimination within the campus of one of the most prominent universities in India that is Jamia Millia Islamia. It has compiled a report outlining a troubling pattern of religious bias against Hindus that has been ongoing at the University campus.
The committee included distinguished personalities like Shiv Narayan Dhingra, the former judge of the Delhi High Court, SN. Srivastava, the former Commissioner of Delhi Police and Dr. Nadeem Ahmed, a notable academician.
Major findings
The NGO found that Non-Muslims especially the Hindu members of the university, are being subjected to threats, discrimination, and even forced religious conversions. According to reports, instances of coercion include threats of acid attacks, failure in examination, and rape for resisting conversion. Hindu students were also pressured to recite the Kalma and convert to Islam by claiming to offer personal benefits. Moreover, the report’s findings reveal systemic religious bias, including accusations of Muslim faculty members deliberately failing Hindu students in exams to pressurize them into conversion.
The report also details incidents of derogatory behavior, including an Assistant Professor enduring taunts from Muslim colleagues and an SC faculty member being denied basic amenities like office furniture, which were provided to others. A senior non-Muslim administrative officer was reportedly mocked for holding his position. Tribal students too were harassed which led to some leaving the University.
Jamia Millia Islamia administration’s official response
On its part, the present administration said that it condemn any form of discrimination within the campus. It also acknowledged that under the previous administrations such incidents might have taken place. However, it stressed that under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif, significant steps are being taken to cultivate a culture of equity, fairness, and mutual respect across the institution.
