The first Air Marshal of India, Subroto Mukerjee, a visionary leader whose thoughts and ideas formed the foundation of Indian Air Force growth into one of the most respected air forces in the world. His journey from his early years as a young boy full of passion for aviation to becoming the highest-ranking officer in the Indian Air Force is an inspiring story of dedication, leadership, and strategic foresight.
Early Life and Education
Born on 5th March 1911 in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), Subroto Mukerjee was the youngest of four children in a family with great academic and intellectual moorings. His father, Ashutosh Mukherjee, was an eminent judge and distinguished scholar, and his mother, Sarala Mukherjee, was equally well-educated and instilled in her children a deep respect for education and duty.
From an early age, Mukerjee showed interest in science and technology, although it was the early phases of aviation in the 1920s and 1930s that deeply interested him. Inspiration to fly came to him through one of his uncles, who served in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Mukerjee was a student of St. Xavier’s School, Kolkata, and was reading economics in Presidency College but had his military career in mind all this while and wanted to join the military and have a career in aviation.
Entry into Royal Air Force and Early Career in the Military
Mukerjee’s dream took flight in 1932 when he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the United Kingdom for pilot training. At that time, India had no air force and was still a few years away from forming the Indian Air Force. Mukerjee was one of six Indian recruits chosen for training at the elite RAF College in Cranwell, Lincolnshire. Mukerjee was commissioned to the Royal Air Force immediately upon the completion of his training, after which he received his wings.
Mukerjee distinguished himself in the years preceding and during World War II. In this period, he gained both flying as well as operational leadership experience. In 1936-37, he was deployed in northern Waziristan, where he participated in operations that quelled a rebellion in the North-West Frontier Province, then a British province now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His exemplary leadership skills were soon identified, and Mukerjee was made a squadron leader by 1939. He became the first Indian in that rank.
Contribution to Indian Air Force
When India became independent in 1947, Subroto Mukerjee was the senior most officer in the Indian Air Force. He was promoted as Air Vice Marshal and served as Deputy Chief of Air Staff under the British Air Marshal Sir Thomas Elmhirst. His years of service under British leadership provide him with a lot of experience and insight necessary to eventually take command of the IAF.
Mukerjee went on to become the Commander-in-Chief of the IAF, a title that later became the Chief of the Air Staff. His work included modernization, as he aimed to equip the air force with more advanced aircraft and be more operationally prepared. Despite strong resistance in securing adequate resources after V.K. Krishna Menon became Defense Minister in 1957, Mukerjee did undertake significant upgrading of the IAF’s fleet.
Under his leadership, several advanced aircraft came to the Indian Air Force, but Mukerjee could not fully implement his vision. Still, his leadership during the Indo-China war of 1962 and the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965 proved to be very crucial for the IAF’s future. Although Mukerjee had served his term when the Sino-Indian War broke in 1962, the seeds he sowed there germinated and grew to feed the IAF participation during subsequent wars, which always brought it into a strategic coordination that involved both the Army and the Navy as well.
Legacy and Death
Subroto Mukerjee’s death was a great loss to the Indian Air Force and the nation when he died choking at a restaurant after attending a function in Tokyo on November 8, 1960, two years after his elevation to the rank of Air Marshal. Though Mukerjee passed away at a tender age, his legacy remains the guiding force for IAF.
In his honor, there is the Subroto Mukerjee Memorial Trust, the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Complex in Delhi, and the Subroto Mukerjee Cup, a high school football tournament considered to be one of the most prestigious of its kind. The vision and leadership had essentially made the Indian Air Force a force to reckon with, ready to protect the skies of India.
A legend in his own right, Subroto Mukerjee was not only India’s first Air Marshal but also became the creator of a modern Indian Air Force that went on to become one of the most capable and respected forces in the world. His leadership skills, passion for perfection, and understanding of the complexities of free India ensured that the Indian Air Force continued to advance itself over the years.
