The much awaited film of actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, “Emergency” which will cover the incidents during the emergency from 1975 to 1977 imposed by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi has finally got a release date after several delays. The movie is going to knock the doors of the theaters next year on 17th of January, 2025. The film ‘Emergency’, written, directed, and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, faced several delays before receiving a censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The actress shared the update on Instagram, describing the film as “the epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny”.

The movie was all set to release on the 6th of September this year but it had to face many hindrances, including the usual suspects including Khalistanis standing against the release of the movie as it will uncover the historical events during India’s darkest chapters of Independent history, Emergency. Also, the Khalistani sympathizers too raised objections to the release of the film and even resorted to issuing multiple rape and death threat to the Bollywood actress.
The Bombay High Court had earlier directed the CBFC to address objections from Sikh groups regarding specific scenes. After reviewing the film, the CBFC granted it a ‘UA’ certification, with three recommended cuts, including modifications to visuals showing Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees.
Shreyas Talpade, who plays Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the film, expressed relief over the final approval. Speaking about the delays, he said, “As an actor, it’s upsetting when your film gets delayed, but now that we’ve received the green signal, we’re extremely happy.”
Set during India’s Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, a time marked by severe restrictions on civil rights and press freedom, Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency, will delve into the dramatic events of the era and Indira Gandhi’s assassination. The cast of the movie includes Kangana Ranaut herself portraying the character of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as former chief of army staff Sam Manekshaw, Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, and the late Satish Kaushik playing the role of late Defence Minister Jagjivan Ram.
