World leaders see India as a country that could help in resolving the on-going war between Russia and Ukraine with many, Including Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his warm relationship with President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict.
On Saturday, Meloni said countries like India and China can help find solution to the issue, which has resulted in huge losses in terms of human and other resources to the world.
She made these remarks at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio city after holding a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The development took place less than 48 hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted India’s efforts in solving the ongoing crisis in the region.
“… I think that in the end nations, like China and India, can play a role and must play a role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine,” she said addressing the meeting.
Meanwhile, India’s long-standing good relations with Russia are at play with Prime Minister Narendra Modi trying to explore every possible opportunity to sincerely help Putin resolve Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Last week, Putin, while addressing the meeting of the Economic Forum in Vladivostok, recognized efforts by India in providing a “helping hand” to resolve the issue.
“We respect our friends and partners who I think are sincerely interested in addressing and resolving all the issues associated with the conflict (with Ukraine).
China, Brazil, India… I am in contact with my partners and I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries, and we have the relations of trust and confidence with one another, will be really interested in providing a helping hand,” the Russian leader was quoted as saying.
Modi, who visited Ukraine on August 23, had urged Zelenskyy to engage in direct talks with Russia, saying there should not be any delay in seeking an end to the war.
This followed Modi’s meeting with Putin a few weeks ago.
Interestingly, Modi spoke to Putin on phone and apprised the Russian leader about his recent visit to Ukraine. He also reiterated India’s commitment to support an early peaceful resolution of the conflict.
In July, the US had also urged India to utilize its relationship with Russia to end the war
US State Department Spokesperson Mathew Miller had said, “India has a longstanding relationship with Russia. I think that’s well-known. And we have encouraged India to utilize that relationship with Russia, that longstanding relationship and the unique position that they have, to urge President Putin to end his illegal war and to find a just peace, a lasting peace to this conflict; to tell Putin to respect the UN Charter, to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty”.
