Why is the Magic of Narendra Modi Fading Away?

Even those who once supported the BJP might now question the narrative around Prime Minister Narendra Modi. How much economic discomfort are people willing to endure for the sake of a leader’s grand vision?

Modi’s Initial Promise

When Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, he presented a clear narrative. The previous UPA government was seen as corrupt and inefficient, holding together only through a shared dislike for India’s Hindu culture. Modi promised to change this, offering an administration that was both clean and efficient, proud of India’s heritage, and committed to promoting it. His narrative included a focus on lifting India materially while embracing Hindu pride. He also emphasized that his government would prioritize the poor, crafting a well-rounded and emotionally appealing story.

The Impact of Modi’s Story

This compelling narrative had a significant impact. For instance, when Modi asked wealthier citizens to give up their subsidized LPG connections, over one crore Indians complied without hesitation. Similarly, during the demonetization (DeMo) of 2016, despite the massive disruption it caused, there were no large-scale protests. Instead, the BJP secured a significant victory in Uttar Pradesh just months later, largely due to Modi’s leadership. The narrative at the time was that any inconvenience was justified as part of a larger fight against black money and corruption, giving people a sense of noble purpose.

A Shift in Perception

However, if Modi were to announce another demonetization today, it is likely that there would be widespread protests, potentially escalating to violence. What has changed since 2016? The issue is not Modi’s integrity or energy but the weakening of his broader narrative.

The Erosion of the ‘Story’

In 2016, demonetization was seen as a step towards reducing black money and improving India. Today, despite any progress made, corruption remains rampant at many levels of government, especially at the state level. Modi’s early years in power bought him some leeway, but a decade later, if local officials are still demanding bribes, people are less likely to support anti-corruption efforts led by Modi.

The Missing Emotional Connection

Earlier this year, speeches from the treasury benches emphasized how Modi’s third term would make India’s economy the third largest in the world—a crucial goal. However, this message lacked an emotional connection for ordinary citizens. For a homemaker in Shravasti who benefited from various government schemes, the idea of India having the third-largest GDP did not translate into a personal aspiration. Without a compelling national story, voters turned to local issues and narratives.

The Limits of Statistics

The BJP’s significant wins in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha do not negate the fact that many supporters may have moved on from Modi’s narrative. In Gujarat and MP, BJP has built a strong base over the years, while in Odisha, specific local factors played a role. The point is not about BJP losing support, but about the shift in the perception of Modi’s narrative.

The Power of Stories

Human beings can endure hardship if they believe it serves a larger purpose. Without a meaningful narrative, suffering feels pointless and unbearable. At a societal level, people will overlook statistics if they are emotionally invested in their leader’s story. Stories provide meaning to experiences, helping people see beyond immediate hardships.

Conclusion

The narrative that once galvanized support for Modi is not as compelling today. For Modi to regain the emotional connection with the people, a new, powerful story(narratives and goals) needs to be told. Without it, even loyal supporters may question the sacrifices they are asked to make. Goals are essential because they give meaning to our lives and our collective experiences. Without them, we are merely individuals navigating a vast, indifferent universe.
