Who are the favourites to win IPL 2024?

As the 2024 Indian Premier League season reaches its midway point, the tournament has been defined by an unprecedented dominance of bat over ball. The average run-rate of 9.49 is the highest ever seen after 35 matches in IPL history. Amidst this run-fest, a few teams have emerged as early favourites to lift the trophy come May 26th at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Leading the pack are the Rajasthan Royals, who have won 7 out of their first 8 matches and are currently the bookmakers’ choice according to betting odds. However, they face stiff competition from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, who are revolutionising batting with their aggressive approach.

And one can never count out the Chennai Super Kings, especially with the prospect of a fairytale finish for MS Dhoni in his final season.

In this article, we analyse the top contenders for the IPL 2024 crown at the halfway stage, examining their strengths, concerns and X-factors.

Rajasthan Royals lead the pack

The Rajasthan Royals have been the standout team of IPL 2024, winning 7 out of their first 8 matches. According to BettingGuide.com, Rajasthan Royals are currently the favourite, with a 33.33% chance of winning the IPL 2024.

The Royals’ success can be attributed to a well-balanced squad firing on all cylinders. Their bowling attack has been spearheaded by the fiery Trent Boult, who has consistently struck in the powerplay overs.

But it’s the Royals’ batting that has truly captured the imagination. The dynamic opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler have laid the platform with quickfire starts. However, the revelation has been the form of youngster Riyan Parag. The 21-year-old has showcased incredible hitting ability and composure, rescuing RR from tricky situations. His tally of 357 runs at a strike rate of 158.6 makes him one of the season’s finds.

With a solid core and all-round contributions from skipper Sanju Samson, Jason Holde, and Shimron Hetmyer, the Royals have all the ingredients of champions. A second IPL trophy could be heading to the Pink City if they continue their red-hot form.

Sunrisers Hyderabad and KKR close behind

Hot on the heels of the Royals are the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, two teams redefining the art of batting in T20 cricket.

The Sunrisers have adopted a no-holds-barred approach, going hell for leather from ball one. This ultra-aggressive intent has seen them post record totals and lead the scoring rates in all phases of the innings.

But SRH’s batting might not end there. The addition of Heinrich Klaasen has given them a dynamic finisher in the middle order. The South African has showcased his 360-degree hitting ability, effortlessly finding the gaps and clearing the ropes at will. With Aiden Markram, Harry Brook and Washington Sundar firing, SRH have a batting lineup that can chase down any total.

The Knight Riders have also embraced a fearless batting philosophy this season. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer gave them explosive starts, allowing the middle-order to capitalise. The ever-reliable trio of Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana and Andre Russell have all been among the runs, providing the perfect blend of stability and firepower.

But KKR’s real strength lies in their spin attack. The mystery spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy have been at their miserly best, strangling teams in the middle overs. They have been well supported by the emerging Suyash Sharma, who has bamboozled batsmen with his leg-breaks and googlies.

With Lockie Ferguson and Shardul Thakur providing the pace options, KKR has a well-rounded attack for all conditions.

If SRH and KKR can maintain their aggressive batting tempo and strong bowling performances, they could be the teams to beat in the playoffs.

Don’t count out CSK

The Chennai Super Kings may not be the bookmakers’ favourites like the Rajasthan Royals or the most hyped team like Sunrisers Hyderabad, but it would be foolish to write off the defending champions. CSK has been the model of consistency in the IPL, having made the playoffs 12 times in 16 seasons, including an incredible ten finals appearances.

CSK’s success can be attributed to its astute auction strategy of retaining a core group of players and supplementing them with smart buys. This year was no different, as they held on to skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, veteran wicketkeeper MS Dhoni, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and ace pacer Deepak Chahar. The additions of the New Zealand duo Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra further bolster a formidable lineup.

CSK’s biggest strength lies in the intangibles – their team culture, experience and the Midas touch of ‘Thala’ Dhoni. The 41-year-old may be in the twilight of his career, but his mere presence is enough to lift the team. With the final scheduled to be played at CSK’s fortress Chepauk, Dhoni will be determined to sign off with a fairytale finish.

The Final Verdict

As the IPL 2024 season reaches its midway point, the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings have emerged as the leading contenders for the title. The Royals have been the most consistent, while SRH and KKR have revolutionised batting with their aggressive approach. CSK, meanwhile, will be hoping to give MS Dhoni a fairytale finish in his final season.

As the race for playoff spots intensifies, the excitement is set to reach fever pitch. Will the Royals live up to their billing as favourites? Can SRH and KKR’s high-risk strategy pay off? Will Dhoni get his storybook ending? Or will a dark horse emerge victorious?

One thing is certain – the second half of IPL 2024 promises to be an absolute thriller. Strap in and enjoy the ride; the best is yet to come!
