India, the world’s most populous country, is soaring to new heights in the realm of space exploration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled India’s grand vision for space, which includes a moon mission and the establishment of a space station by 2040. As part of this ambitious endeavor, India is gearing up for a test flight for its first crewed space mission, scheduled for Saturday, October 21.
The Indian government declared, “India should now aim for new and ambitious goals,” marking a decisive shift in the country’s space exploration aspirations. The plan includes setting up an Indian Space Station by 2035 and sending the first Indian astronaut to the moon by 2040.
“To realize this vision, the Department of Space will develop a roadmap for moon exploration,” the statement emphasized.
India’s Three-Day Manned Mission: Gaganyaan
The cornerstone of India space exploration ambitions is the forthcoming three-day manned mission, aptly named Gaganyaan or “Skycraft.” This historic mission is slated to take place next year, and it carries an estimated cost of approximately $1.08 billion (€1.02 billion), according to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Notably, India is known for its ability to conduct space exploration operations on a relatively low budget. Recent Successes and Upcoming Missions
India has already made significant strides in the field of space exploration. In August, it achieved the remarkable feat of landing a spacecraft near the lunar south pole. Building on this achievement, last month saw the successful launch of a mission designed to observe the outer layers of the sun.
In 2014, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) made headlines by putting a satellite into orbit around Mars, an accomplishment that garnered international recognition. In 2017, ISRO set another milestone by launching a record-breaking 104 satellites in a single mission.
India is not stopping there. The country is actively collaborating with other nations on a series of upcoming missions. Plans include a joint moon probe with Japan, the landing of a craft on Mars, and a mission to explore Venus within the next two years.
The Optimism of ISRO
India’s space endeavors are not solely for exploration; they also have economic implications. Currently, India’s share in the global space economy, valued at $386 billion (€384 billion), is merely two percent. However, India is aspiring to boost its share to nine percent by 2030.
