The Indian film industry, often celebrated for its larger-than-life storytelling and mesmerizing musical sequences, has also dabbled in portraying historical events, including wars. However, historical accuracy is not always a top priority in Bollywood and other regional cinema.
Nonetheless, there are a few exceptional Indian war dramas that have managed to stand out for their unwavering commitment to historical precision. In an industry where creative liberties often overshadow facts; these seven films offer a refreshing and accurate portrayal of pivotal moments in India’s military history:
Haqeeqat [1964]:
One of the first attempts in this genre, the movie is a fictionalized representation of the battle of Rezang La in Ladakh, where Ahir Company, led by Major Shaitan Singh, made their last stand. It’s not just about the war but also shows how war affects regular soldiers. Chetan Anand dedicated the film to the soldiers in Ladakh. You simply cannot be human if you haven’t got emotional on the patriotic song “Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon”!

Vijeta [1982]:
“Vijeta,” directed by Govind Nihalani, is a 1982 Bollywood film centered around the life of a young Indian Air Force pilot who undergoes rigorous training and faces personal challenges. While the film offers a gripping narrative and explores the emotional journey of the protagonist, it doesn’t aim for strict historical accuracy. Yet, the accuracy with respect to the training and the methodology of aspirants training for the defence forces is rare to find event today.
Lakshya [2004]:
Loosely inspired by Govind Nihalani’s “Vijetya”, and set against the backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War, Farhan Akhtar’s “Lakshya” is a remarkable example of a war drama that meticulously recreates the events of the conflict. The film focuses on the personal journey of Lieutenant Karan Shergill, played by Hrithik Roshan, while also portraying the larger conflict with authenticity. The attention to detail in terms of military tactics, uniforms, and battle sequences makes “Lakshya” a standout war drama in terms of historical accuracy.
1971 [2007]:
“1971,” directed by Amrit Sagar, chronicles the events of the 1971 Indo-Pak War and the liberation of Bangladesh. The film offers a gripping portrayal of the war and the sacrifices made by Indian and Bangladeshi soldiers. What sets “1971” apart is its commitment to historical accuracy, with precise military tactics and equipment, ensuring that the audience experiences the war as it truly unfolded.
Uri: The Surgical Strike [2019]:
“Uri: The Surgical Strike,” directed by Aditya Dhar, narrates the real-life surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army in 2016 as a response to a terrorist attack in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. The film is praised not only for its gripping storytelling but also for its attention to detail regarding military operations, equipment, and the covert nature of the mission.
Shershaah [2019]:
Directed by Vishnu Vardhan, this movie centered around the life and exploits of the daredevil soldier, Captain Vikram Batra. Contrary to the typical war drama template, the movie focused on almost every aspect of Vikram Batra’s whirlwind journey, including his connection with the eponymous tagline “Ye Dil Maange More!” Compared to “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, most of the army veterans were more favorable to this movie in terms of historical accuracy, which is a rare honor!

Major [2022]:
Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, this was also one rare authentic portrayal of a military personnel, especially when the subject was Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. For someone who was making his debut in Hindi, Adivi Sesh handled the subject, as well as the accuracy fairly well. Not many know that apart from being an able actor, Adivi is a skilled scriptwriter as well, which reflected in this movie also!
In an industry where creative liberties often reign supreme; these seven Indian war dramas shine as rare exceptions that prioritize historical accuracy. Through meticulous attention to detail in costumes, military tactics, weaponry, and historical events, they transport audiences to critical moments in India’s military history. These films not only entertain but also educate, offering a glimpse into the bravery, sacrifices, and complexities of war while remaining true to the historical records.
