“I am a fan of Modi”: PM Modi has supporters and detractors in equal measure. However, his recent US visit has brought out a new fanboy in the form of entrepreneurial hotshot and CEO of Twitter Inc., Elon Musk.
Let’s analyze the recent meeting between PM Modi and Elon Musk (I am a fan of Modi), and why the latter is overawed by the same.
The new fanboy of PM Narendra Modi
In a surprising development during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent U.S visit, tech magnate Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Twitter Inc., extended his support, expressing his admiration for Modi’s leadership. This endorsement came about during a meeting between the two leaders, with Musk revealing plans to further explore business prospects in India. Musk and Modi’s meeting marks their first encounter since Musk took over the reins at Twitter. The pair had previously met in 2015 during Modi’s visit to the Tesla Motors factory in California. On this occasion, Musk showcased his support for PM Modi’s endeavours to foster a digital infrastructure that is inclusive and offers an advantage to India.
“I can say he really wants to do the right thing for India. He wants to be open; he wants to be supportive of new companies, obviously, but at the same time, make sure it accrues to India’s advantage,” Elon Musk shared with ANI. He also expressed his personal admiration for Modi, stating, “I am a fan of Modi.”
Musk has been keen on strengthening business relations with India for a while now. During the meeting, he revealed tentative plans for an India visit next year, further solidifying his interest in the country. “He did [extend an invitation]. And yes, I’m tentatively planning to visit India again next year. I’m looking forward,” Musk stated.
“We have to obey the laws”
Interestingly, Musk’s latest endorsement does come in the wake of the BJP-led government’s threat to shut down Twitter during the peak of the farmers’ protests in 2020, as alleged by former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey. Musk’s response to this situation was pragmatic, acknowledging the necessity for Twitter to adhere to the laws of individual nations.
“Twitter does not have a choice but to obey local governments. If we don’t obey local government laws, we will get shut down… We will do our best to provide the freest speech that is possible under the law,” Musk commented.
The Tesla CEO sees promise in India, describing it as a country with more potential than any other large nation. He elaborated on how PM Modi’s leadership is urging significant investment from Tesla in India, which they are planning and merely finalising the appropriate timing for.
In a previous interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk had affirmed Tesla’s interest in the Indian market. He hinted that by the end of the year, Tesla would likely settle on a location for its Indian factory, signalling a substantial commitment to India’s industrial sector.
On reflecting on his meeting with PM Modi, Musk praised the Prime Minister’s commitment towards India and his efforts to invite foreign investment. “It was a fantastic meeting with the Prime Minister and I like him quite a lot,” Musk admitted.
The newfound rapport between PM Modi and Elon Musk brings about exciting prospects for India in the technological and automotive sectors, with the promise of increased foreign investment and collaboration on the horizon.
