The Maharashtra government has ramped up its efforts to retrieve a piece of historical heritage from England. They have requested that the Central Government initiate talks with Rishi Sunak’s government to bring back the sword of Shivaji “Jagdamb” from England, even if it is just for one year. This signals the Maharashtra government’s current aggressive stance.

I imagine you’re curious about the heritage that has piqued the interest of Maharashtra’s current administration. Well, it’s none other than the legendary sword “Jagdamb” that belonged to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Hindavi Swarajya and the heir to the Maratha Empire. This sword, with its unique texture and sharpness, is one of the most priceless possessions of the Maratha Empire. Unfortunately, the British stole it from the rightful heirs and added it to their private collection.
Not just this heritage
The Syamantaka gem, which some believe to be the Kohinoor, is the only one not under British control. However, there are numerous other gems and treasures that were once part of India’s rich cultural heritage and are now housed in British museums or even in the private collection of the British Royal Family.
In addition, the tiger claw that Shivaji Raje used to defeat the fearsome invader Afzal Khan is also displayed in the Royal Albert Hall Museum in England. The British have also acquired many other treasures from the throne of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, not to mention the infamous Kohinoor diamond and how it was fraudulently taken to become an “integral part” of the British Royal Family.

Opportunity is rare
The need for “Jagdamb” has arisen now because the next year, in 2024, will mark the 350th anniversary of the official coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1674, Shivaji Raje was officially declared the founder and protector of the Maratha Empire at his grand coronation. While the work of establishing the Maratha Empire had started in 1659, it was in 1674 that Shivaji Raje and his Mavdas warriors officially determined the boundaries of the empire.
The campaign to retrieve “Jagdamb” could have started in 2022, but at that time, the administration led by Uddhav Thackeray was not interested in the cause. However, the command is now in the hands of Eknath Shinde, who is determined to ensure that the anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation in 2024 is celebrated with grandeur. The retrieval of “Jagdamb” is an important part of this celebration, as it is a priceless heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that was fraudulently taken by the British and included in their private museum.
