Has BJP become the dumping yard of Bhojpuri superstars past their prime?

Are Pawan Singh and Khesari Lal Yadav joining BJP?

Pawan Singh BJP joining rumors: Over the years, several Bhojpuri superstars have entered politics with different political parties, but a majority of them have joined the BJP. Each one of them claims that they want to enter active politics and not remain mere fence-sitters after getting elected. But in this article, we will analyse whether they have achieved anything substantive or whether they have acted as non-performing assets for the BJP and Indian politics as a whole?

Are Pawan Singh and Khesari Lal Yadav joining BJP?

There is a great buzz in the Bhojpuri film industry and media fraternity that a lot more Bhojpuri superstars may join the Bhartiya Janta Party in the near future. The basis for these speculations is said to be the frequent meetings between Bhojpuri superstars and BJP bigwigs. As per media reports, Bhojpuri’s hitmaker Khesari Lal Yadav reached Patna on the 19th of April, where the media asked queries about his intention of joining politics.

Responding to these queries, he said that if everyone enters politics, then who will act as a hero in the Bhojpuri industry? Khesari asserted that he should be allowed to remain a hero. He also commented on Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan, and Nirahua, saying that the elder brothers are taking care of politics. He noted that if everyone in a family only does one type of work, then who will handle the rest?

He added that he feels he is deeply loved by the people and has become a hero to them. He acknowledged that not everyone can accomplish everything in life, but he is always willing to cooperate with his elder brothers who are doing well. He also noted that he is known for the genre for which his fans have chosen him and given him love.

A few days earlier, Bhojpuri’s powerstar Pawan Singh had met BJP leaders. Media reports claim that after meeting BJP leaders, Pawan Singh expressed his desire to contest the elections. Interacting with a media channel, Pawan Singh gave a statement on a similar line.

The not-so rich legacy of Bhojpuri superstars in active politics

First things first, all these Bhojpuri superstars should have looked inward and reflected on what they could have done for the betterment of their own industry. To be honest, the Bhojpuri industry is looked down upon for its awful content, which many deem a platform for obscenity and crass songs.

Can they claim that they have worked relentlessly to redeem the image of the Bhojpuri industry to be really hailed as Bhojpuri Superstars? Why are Bhojpuri films lagging behind and not competing in the same manner as some quality content in Bollywood or other regional industries?

Let’s leave it at that. Coming to the elephant in the room, that is, their political aspirations, are they really loyal ideological footsoldiers of any party? In simple words, it is not an exaggeration to say that they have chosen politics just as a retirement plan and joined the ruling establishment of the day.

Let me explain this with an example: I am saying that these Bhojpuri Superstars are not loyal ideologues but mere opportunists. Former BJP State President Manoj Tiwari once contested the Lok Sabha elections against Yogi Adityanath on behalf of the Samajwadi Party in Gorakhpur in 2009. Similarly, Ravi Kishan Shukla was also an SP supporter.

Also read: No, Bhojpuri is not a vulgar language. But Bhojpuri pop culture vulgarised it and has defamed the community

Later, he was a Congress candidate from Phulpur constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where he suffered a terrible defeat. In a sudden “change of heart”, he joined his erstwhile rival, the BJP, in 2018. In 2019, Ravi was successful in winning the election from Gorakhpur. Although Dinesh Lal Yadav, aka Nirhua,” did not turn out to be a political turncoat like others

But other than joining the BJP, he has not much to flaunt in politics under his name, so he should not be taken seriously in politics. The BJP would have wanted him to corner and challenge former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav in his own bastion, Azamgarh, just like Smriti Irani cornered Rahul Gandhi in Amethi on a regular basis, which eventually translated into her electoral win.

There have been strong clamours within BJP ideologues and supporters that Manoj Tiwari, the so-called tall leader for the BJP in Delhi, is more of a liability than an asset.

It’s disheartening that Bhojpuri cinema stars have left no stone unturned to trash and slang the language spoken mainly in eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar, with more than 50 million speakers. The internet worsens things by making such content freely available and not only polluting the Bhojpuri language but also filling it with sexuality and profanity.

The irony is that while the entire Bhojpuri industry’s superstars are donning the political ropes with the BJP and eyeing to become big leaders, the Bihar and Delhi BJP units have not gained even a bit thanks to their political incompetence and inertia to learn the necessary traits of the game.
