Arunachalam Temple – Guide
The Sri Arunachalam Temple at Annamalai Hill in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu is one of the Panch Bhoota Sthalas where Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of fire and the Shiva lingam installed here is called Agni Lingam. These Shiva temples are as revered as the twelve Jyotirlingas established across India.
History of this Temple
The history of the birth of Lord Shiva in the form of fire in the temple is ages old. Once when Mother Parvati playfully asked Lord Shiva to close his eyes, he closed his eyes and due to this the entire universe was in darkness for many thousands of years. To dispel this darkness, the devotees of Lord Shiva performed severe penance, due to which Mahadeva appeared as a pillar of fire on the hill of Annamalai. That is why Lord Shiva is worshiped here in the form of Arunachaleshwar and the Shiva lingam installed here is also called Agni Lingam.
The temple was built in the 7th century, which was renovated by the Chola kings in the 9th century. The history of the temple is available in the Tamil texts Thevaram and Thiruvasagam.
