MHA recommends a CBI inquiry against Aman Biradari
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended a CBI inquiry against Aman Biradari, an NGO founded by writer and human rights activist Harsh Mander. The reason for the inquiry is an alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
According to the FCRA, all NGOs receiving foreign funding must register with the Home Ministry. As of March 10, 2023, there were 16,383 FCRA-registered organizations in India. A total of 55,449 crore in foreign funding has been received by Indian NGOs in the last three years. This includes 16,306.04 crore in 2019–20, 17,058.64 crore in 2020–21, and 22,085.10 crore in 2021–22.
Aman Biradari in question
Harsh Mander founded Aman Biradari as a “people’s campaign for a secular, peaceful, just, and humane world” in response to the Gujarat communal carnage of 2002. The NGO claims to work with other people’s organizations and groups for the defense of secularism, public compassion, and promoting the values of the constitution. However, it turns out that all that was a cover to carry on the evil game of foreign funding.
The CBI inquiry against Aman Biradari highlights the need for NGOs to comply with the FCRA and other relevant laws. It is essential for NGOs to be transparent about their funding sources and ensure that they are using the funds for their intended purposes.

The Nexus of Harsh and Sonia Gandhi
It is noteworthy that Harsh Mander had previously been under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. It becomes important to highlight that the news comes just a few months after the cancellation of the FCRA registration of two NGOs headed by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The cancellation was also due to alleged violations of laws.
And that he was a member of the National Advisory Council of the Indian Government during the UPA regime. The move signals a strike on Nexus, which may eventually lead to senior leaders of Congress, including Sonia Gandhi.
