Kankali Mata Mandir Katni – Guide
Kankali Mata Mandir is one of the earliest temples of goddess Kali Maa, known as one of the Shaktipeeths among Hindu pilgrims, located in Tigawa town of Katni district of Madhya Pradesh. It is about 20 kms from Bhopal. Being so old is one of the centres of devotion for Hindus. There is a unique thing about Maa Kali idol, during Navratri the neck of Maa Kali idol moves slightly from its original position.
History of this Temple
Alexander Cunningham visited Tigawa in 1873 and reported the town’s antiquities. He points to a rectangular mound 250 feet long and 120 feet wide which was completely covered with large blocks of cut stones. 200 carts were used to bring it to the foot of the hill. Cunningham estimated that the Kankali Mata Mandir of Katni would have been about 19.5 feet square. The temples were of various sizes from 4 feet square to 15 feet square. Temple 10 to 15 feet square Large temples had an additional verandah in front.
An 8th-century engraving mentions the visit of Umadeva of Kanyakubja, son of the general Bhatta, who came to worship at the temple of Setabhadra. There are also 2 engravings in conch shell script.
