Power transmission of India is set for a smart makeover. The Indian government plans to use a variety of technology solutions to update and upgrade the nation’s electricity transmission system. Many improvements to the power transmission system have been suggested by a task force that the Power Ministry established in September 2021. After discussions presided over by Union Power Minister R. K. Singh, the report was approved by the cabinet. Singh underlined the necessity for a completely automated, digitally controlled grid that can offer the public reliable and inexpensive power 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while also achieving environmental objectives.
Task force recommendations were approved
Moreover, Singh directed the Central Power Authority to develop standards and guidelines for the adoption of the identified technological solutions as well as to establish performance targets for the Power transmission network of India. The task force suggested a number of technological improvements, including energy storage systems, centralized remote monitoring, AI/ML-based predictive maintenance, and the utilization of robots and drones for the building and inspection of transmission lines. Robotics and drone utilization are anticipated to decrease the need for human intervention, eliminate threats to human life and property, ensure accuracy, and free up time.

While long-term interventions will be undertaken over a period of 3-5 years, the recommended initiatives are anticipated to be executed during a short- to medium-term of 1-3 years. The long-term improvements will concentrate on securing the transmission system’s future and keeping up with the quickly evolving technical environment.
