Chetan Sharma resignation: The craving for relevance has often resulted in the downfall of notable personalities in all walks of life. The recent debacle of Chetan Sharma, courtesy of his bolstering and blabbering to stay relevant, is a tough lesson for all those who don’t want to undo the hard work of their careers in lieu of media glare.
The indelible taint on a decent cricketing legacy
In the wake of his controversial running commentary in a sting operation, Chetan Sharma has voluntarily given his resignation from the post of Chairman of the Selection Committee. In this article, we will discuss his cricketing career and how he missed numerous opportunities to redeem himself after retiring.
Yet each time he has failed to grasp these opportunities, and now the recent fiasco is an indelible blot of epic proportions. Chetan Sharma, a former Indian cricketer, represented Haryana and Delhi teams in his domestic career. In his first-class cricket career, he took more than 400 wickets.
Going ahead, he represented India from 1984–1994. He played as a right-arm medium-fast bowler and became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in a One-Day International, which he achieved in 1987 against New Zealand.

In the 1986–87 season, Chetan Sharma was the leading wicket-taker in the Wills Trophy limited-overs tournament, taking 13 wickets.
Apart from the historic first hat-trick, he finished as India’s leading wicket-taker in the 1987 World Cup. In total, he took 11 wickets in the World Cup’s seven matches. In his decade-long international career, Chetan Sharma played 23 Tests and 65 ODIs in the Indian jersey, picking a total of 106 international wickets.
Analyzing his post-retirement career
Post-retirement, he was seen in the role of a commentator and cricket expert on multiple media channels, deliberating on Indian cricket.
On December 24, 2020, the BCCI entrusted him with the role of Chairman of the Selection Committee of the Indian Cricket Team. He is credited with having taken several stern decisions during his time as a chief selector. Reportedly, he played a crucial hand in the Border Gavaskar Series when Indian players were suffering back-to-back injuries.
However, following the disappointing exit of the Indian team from the 2022 T20 World Cup in November 2022, Chetan Sharma was sacked from the position of BCCI national chief selector. When he reapplied for the position, BCCI quickly reappointed him.

Rather than acting maturely after assuming the important position, he appears to have succumbed to the media fraternity’s bait in the hope of remaining relevant in media circles, and after resignation Chetan Sharma is now paying for this fool-hardy choice.
