In India, it is an oft-cited adage that some individuals become mentally unhinged after reaching the age of sixty. While Ratan Tata, at the ripe age of eighty-five, remains sound of mind, Narayana Murthy, at seventy-six, has demonstrated an alarming deterioration in his cognitive abilities. It has fallen to the extent that he has taken to disparaging his own homeland on international stage.
The repeated whining of Narayana Murthy
They say “Delhi Dilwalon Ki Hai” which roughly translates to “Delhi belongs to those with big heart.” But Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy on Tuesday shockingly proclaimed that he feels uncomfortable to visit Delhi, claiming it to be the most ill-disciplined city, citing an example of a traffic rule violation to support his statement.
While speaking at the All India Management Association (AIMA) Foundation Day, he declared that in order to prevent dishonest practices in public administration, it is crucial to treat community property with greater care than personal property.
Narayana Murthy further added, “I came yesterday from the Airport. At a red signal, there were so many cars, motorbikes and scooters, you know, violating the red light without a single care. If we can’t even wait a minute or two, just to move forward. Do you think those people will wait if there is money? Of course, they won’t wait.”
This is not the first time when Narayana Murthy saw flaws in India. He has developed a tendency to focus on only negative aspects of India.
Last year, in December, Narayana Murthy stated “In India, reality means corruption, dirty roads, pollution and many times no power. However, reality in Singapore means clean roads, no pollution and lots of power. Therefore, it is your responsibility to create that new reality.”
Before that, in the month of November, Narayana Murthy said “There is not a single Indian institution of higher learning in the top 250 of the world university global ranking that was announced in 2020. Even the vaccines we have produced, or either based on technology from advanced countries, or based on research from the developed world. Consequently, we still have not produced a vaccine for dengue and chikungunya, which have been ravaging us for the last 70 years now.”
Disdain for the country
All of his comments reek of disdain and contempt for India, while he shamelessly proclaimed himself a Confused Communist. Yet, he lacked the courage to comment on the totalitarian policies of a true Communist nation like China.
It is the need of the hour that Narayana Murthy has to understand that, when influential people or business leaders or any social figures engage in destructive criticism of their own country, they can contribute to a sense of hopelessness and lack of progress.
Therefore, it is important for them to use their influence to offer constructive criticism. By doing so, they can inspire positive change, foster growth and development, and create a better future for their communities and country.
