With an emphasis on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, the ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Larsen and Toubro (L&T). As per the contract signed on 8th of February, the Defence ministry will procure 41 modular bridges worth Rs. 2,585 crores for the Corps of Engineers of Indian Armed Forces.
Army to get Modular Bridges extension
Modular Bridges are called so because they are manufactured in modules. These modules are transportable and can be assembled easily and quickly. These bridges play a critical role in places with infrastructural limitations and during rescue missions.
The modular bridges are designed and developed by Defence Research and Development organisation (DRDO). L&T will only produce the Modular Bridges as DRDO’s nominated production agency.
According to the contract, each group of the modular bridge will comprise of seven transport vehicles that are based on 8×8 Heavy Mobility Vehicle (HMV) and two launch vehicles that are based on 10×10 Heavy Mobility Vehicles (HMV).
The Defence Ministry said that the HMV should have the ability to mechanically extend a 46-meter long, fully decked single-span assault bridge. This bridge can be used to cross various obstacles such as canals and ditches, with quick deployment and retrieval capabilities. The equipment is highly mobile, versatile, durable, and can keep up with the speed of wheeled and tracked vehicles.

Since the announcement of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, the government has paid special attention to defence sector. The consequences of the initiatives are clearly visible in the increased capability of not only armed forces but also the defence manufacturing.

India, that was earlier dependent on foreign countries for its defence requirements is now capable of manufacturing aircraft and aircraft carriers along with arms and ammunitions. The modular bridge is another important equipment that will get a place in the checklist after this contract.
