Gondeshwar Mandir Nashik – Guide
The Gondeshwar Mandir is an ancient temple of 11th–12th century which is located in the city of Sinnar in Nashik district of Maharashtra. The Sinnar temple has a panchayatana design, in which a main Shiva temple is also with four subsidiary temples which is dedicated to Surya, Vishnu, Parvati and Ganesha.
History of this Temple
The Gondeshwar Mandir Nashik was built during the reign of the Seuna dynasty, and has been variously dated to the 11th or 12th century. Sinnar was a pre-imperialist dynasty stronghold, and modern historians associate it with Sunapura, a city founded by the Yadava king Suyanchandra.
According to local legend, the town of Sinnar was founded by the Gawli chief Rao Singhuni, and the Gondeshwar Mandir Nashik was built by his son Rao Govinda at a cost of Rs 200,000. Another theory holds that the temple, also known as govindeshwara, was built by the yadava feudatory govinda-raja, but no historical evidence supports this theory.
