Giorgia Meloni India visit: Italy is a country that used its power to its advantage, particularly when it had a good connection with the EU in the past. In doing so, Italy manipulated and took advantage of those who were in a weaker position and ignored countries like India.
Over time, the competition to become the leader of Europe has become more intense and India has become a more powerful presence in Asia. Countries like France and Germany, which were once dismissive of India as a third-world country, are now seeing many business opportunities in the country. Italy, aware of this and the current immigration crisis seeks to reconcile with India, hoping to establish a relation that could potentially be beneficial for both of them.
Giorgia Meloni is far right
Immigration is an issue of great concern across Europe, and Italy is no exception. In response, the Italian people have elected a far-right Prime Minister whose policies reflect a desire for strong diplomatic ties with like-minded leaders and a firm stance on illegal immigration.
Giorgia Meloni, the far-right leader of Italy, will visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2 in India as the chief guest of the Raisina Dialogue conference, three months after their initial encounter in Bali at the G-20 summit.
“A general agreement on bilateral cooperation in the defence sector [is being discussed],” A diplomatic source told The Hindu that the deal will be prepared for signing during Ms. Meloni’s subsequent trip to India in September for the G-20 summit if negotiations are not completed during her visit in March.
Notably since 2018-2019 both countries are developing bilateral relations as well as defence cooperation in different areas.
In the past few years, both sides have worked hard to move past controversial Agustawestland case, Blacklisting of Leonardo and the killing of the Kerala fisherman by two Italian marines, in order to focus on their ‘Make in India’ initiatives, for which Italian companies have been willing partners, said former Indian Ambassador to Italy Anil Wadhwa.

“The decidedly variant views of the Giorgia Meloni government in the Ukraine Russia conflict will make this visit to India an interesting one and her message at the Raisina dialogue will be listened to with great interest,” he added.
Despite the potential benefits, India may find it difficult to blindly trust Italian companies, given their past history. Nevertheless, it’s possible that the two could move past their differences and establish a mutually beneficial relationship.
