Contact lens flesh-eating parasitic: Do you wear your contact lenses to bed as well? Yes, a lot of us occasionally do that. The same incident happened to American Mike Krumholz, who developed a fatal eye infection as a result.
After a long day, American citizen Mike Krumholz, age 21, from Florida, made the decision to nap. The only error he made was to go to sleep without removing his contact lenses. When he awoke, a rare flesh-eating parasite had grown in his eyes, causing a terrible infection that had left his right eye blind.
As he has been wearing contacts for almost seven years, he is used to getting eye infections or “pink eye” if he forgets to remove them sometimes. But this time, things became worse, and it was discovered that Krumholz had acanthamoebic keratitis in his right eye.

Raising awareness among people
Doctors assert that Krumholz developed acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare instance of a flesh-eating parasitic infection that enters the eyes and starts to eat away at the tissue. He was unable to work, study, or generally live a normal life for more than 50 days due to the injury to his right eye.
Krumholz revealed, “When I woke up, I thought I might have had pink eye or really awful allergies. I was misdiagnosed with HSV1 in my eye, but after seeing five different ophthalmologists and two cornea experts, I was found to have acanthamoeba keratitis, a very unusual parasite.”
Now he has created a GoFundMe page to raise awareness among other contact lens wearers and provide himself with financial aid while he battles the debilitating parasite. He has reached approximately 10% of his $10,000 target. In his account posted on February 7, Krumholz recounted the incident that occurred the previous month.
“Not only can I not work, I cannot go outside, I’m just trying to get through this difficult time,” the GoFundMe page quoted Mr Krumholz as saying. He finally appeals to fellow contact lens wearers to not wear them while sleeping or showering.
