Chandrika Devi Mandir – Guide

Chandrika Devi Mandir is located in Kathwara village near Lucknow city. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, Chandrika Devi Temple is said to be over 300 years old. The idol of the presiding deity of the temple is carved out of a single rock and has three heads. This famous tourist destination of Lucknow is thronged by devotees throughout the year. The crowd doubles during Amavasya and Navratri Puja. Here many pilgrims come and can be seen performing various religious rituals like ‘Havan’ and ‘Mundan’.

History of this Temple

It is said that the elder son of Shri Lakshmana – Prince Chandraketu, the founder of Lucknow, was once passing through the Gomti with the Ashwamedha horse. It got dark on the way and so they had to take rest in the then dense forest. He prayed to the Goddess for protection. Within a moment the coolness of the moon prevailed and the goddess appeared before him and assured him.

It is said that a grand temple established here during that period was destroyed by foreign invaders in the 12th century. It is also said that around 250 years ago some villagers from the surrounding areas while roaming in the jungles located this beautiful place surrounded by dense forests.
