History of this Temple

The name Vaitheeswaran was given to Lord Shiva, as he had cured the leprosy of Angarak, who could not find any cure anywhere else. Vaitheeswaran Temple is also associated with the epic Ramayana, which states that Jatayu, the king of birds, was granted salvation in this temple. Even today there is a special temple tank here, and the sacred ashes of Jatayu are kept for the reverence of the public.

Another important feature is that Lord Muruga has only one face. Usually, he is always depicted with six faces. He obtained his weapon, ‘Vel’ from his mother, and destroyed the demon ‘Surapadman’. Lord Shiva heals the wounds of Lord Muruga, which was caused during the battle with the demon Surapadman. Even today a special medicinal ball made of herbs and clay is given as medicine to cure many ailments.
