Yes! You read it right. A complete and immediate ban. And it is needed because BBC has exposed itself time and again and has lost the credibility of reporting on India and in India. The news that it provides are so subtly fake that sometimes it becomes hard to separate news from propaganda. But if you think that it is an exaggerated deduction, let me remind you few anti-India narratives created by BBC to promote hostility in the masses.
Long maligned history of BBC
There is a long list of anti-India propaganda by BBC. Let us catch up to some of them. Starting with the 2019 incident when Yogi Adityanath was completing 4 years of his tenure as a CM and presented his report card. According to him, the crimes in the state were decreasing and no riots took place. But, BBC could not digest it and hence published a report quoting NCRB data that crime rate has increased in the state as have riots. Subsequently, UP Police broke BBC’s dream by countering its report through facts.
As per the IPC Crime report, crime rate from 2016 to 2019 stood at 3.7%, 4%, 4% and 2.5% respectively. Criticising BBC, UP police explained that NCRB data are as per reported crimes. The riot segment of NCRB includes cases registered under concerned laws. In reality, they were not communal riots but just insurgencies against the establishment.
In 2019, BBC published a report hurting the majority sentiments of India. It insulted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ chant by declaring it a murder cry. It is not like that they didn’t know what they were writing. It is actually their agenda to infill hatred in the society and de-glorify Hinduism that is still fighting foreign cultural domination after a long coercive subjugation.
BBC hurts the integrity of India
In its quest of anti-India reporting, BBC in 2019 published a report after the abrogation of Article 370. The report stated that over 10,000 people in the valley took part in the protest against India. But soon, Ministry of Home Affairs proved the report as false. In its statement, the Ministry said that “Only stray protests at Srinagar and Baramulla took place where not more than 20 people were present.”
One report also stated that the protest was dealt violently by the security forces but J&K chief secretary clarified that “not even a single bullet was fired in last six days.” The government of India also enquired the authentic source of information from BBC for such reporting. The attitude of reporting was completely against media ethics and it was done purposefully to further their anti-India agenda and initiate the unrest.
In 2021, BBC apologised for showing the wrong map of India during an interview with Joe Biden. However, it was not a mistake as it was not the first time when BBC showcased its talent of playing with the Atlas. Reporting on Delta variant of Covid-19, BBC depicted a distorted map of India without Jammu and Kashmir.
Last nail in the coffin
In a more recent development, BBC has crossed all the limits. In its latest documentary on PM Modi, it projected him as the one responsible for Gujrat Riots even after the Supreme Court of India has acquitted him of all charges in the case. Indian government described it as a “propaganda piece” designed to put up “discredited narrative.”
The documentary lacks objectivity and is just a prejudiced narration of a story. Now, the Government has used its emergency power under IT Act-2021 clause-16. The act empowers the Secretary of I&B minister to stop the broadcasting of any content through the internet during an emergency. In support of PM Modi, Rishi Sunak, the PM of UK said that he “doesn’t agree with the characterization.”
The list of BBC’s derogatory reporting is endless. These types of reportings are done in only two conditions. Either, BBC does not have the reporting and media ethics or they are very desperate to plate the news with the dish of propaganda. In both the cases, there is only one option in front of the Indian government and that is, a complete, immediate ban on BBC. This documentary should prove to be the last nail in the coffin of BBC’s reporting in India.
