HELINA and VSHROD: The year of 2022 was characterised by surmounting geopolitical strife and turmoil between India and China. While Pakistan had been lurking under the carpet, by illegally exporting weapons through drones and terrorists through incursions. DRDO developing technical marvels for India
The Indian military defence system is one of the fastest developing in the world. The military strength of the nation is fuelled by a defence manufacturing industry that produces state-of-the-art weapons and equipment. At the same time, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) manufactures marvels in the field of technological innovations.
To further the interests of military overhaul on the lines of ‘Make in India’ visions of Prime Minister Modi, India has given a go-ahead nod to the procurement of Very Short Range Air Defence System under the aegis of VSHROD (IR Homing) missile system. Recently, the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has necessitated the Acceptance of Necessity for the DRDO manufactured VSHROD.
In addition of VSHROD, the DAC has also given a green light to the procurement of the HELINA Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. Further, the indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) is to be updated with launchers and associated support equipment. Interestingly, the Defence Acquisition Council has also made endeavours to upgrade the Brahmos Launcher and Fire Control System (FCS) for the Shivalik class of ships and Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) of the India Navy.

HELINA and VSHROD: New 4276 cr. Defence procurement plans
The three capital acquisition proposals (i.e., two of the Army and one of the Navy) would cost the nation a total of Rs 4,276 crore and will be carried out under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The move of the Defence Committee amid the ongoing tussle and longstanding border dispute with China would help boost the morale of the Indian defence forces. The overhaul endeavour will also significantly contribute to the military preparedness of the nation.
The Defence Ministry statement brings out the essence of these developments. It justifies the additional expenditure that is necessitated by the growing Chinese threats along the borders.
The Ministry said, “In view of the recent developments along the northern borders there is a need to focus on effective Air Defence (AD) weapon systems which are man portable and can be deployed quickly in rugged terrain and maritime domain.”
Significantly, the move of the Defence Committee highlights the preparedness of the government to tackle the imperialist and expansionist Chinese conspiracy of encircling India. Through the statement the Ministry has made their intentions clear that the Indian government stands tall against any prospective Chinese threats and incursions. Further, the statement also illustrates that the procurements are strategically targeted towards China and would be deployed on the Eastern front.

VSHORAD and HELINA on LAC
The procurement of VSHORAD, a robust and rapidly deployable system, would strengthen India’s air defence capabilities. Evidently, the recent developments would help IAF prompt with quick and effective response India counter any prospective Chinese fighter jets and drones that come in close proximity of the LAC in eastern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
