The Indian political discourse has become a hotbed of fierce psychosis. The legends like Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar are being ridiculed daily. Veer Savarkar has been instrumental in the development of the Hindu nationalist political ideology, ‘Hindutva‘ while being imprisoned at Ratnagiri in 1922. He played a pivotal role in the dissemination of the ‘Hindutva’ philosophy, propounded previously by Chandranath Basu. As a consequence, even to date, the ‘fascist left’ in India is busy putting him in a bad light because of his admiration for the ‘Hindutva’ philosophy.
Congress cannot afford to abuse Savarkar
After the aberration of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi against the veteran freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the politics of Maharashtra has taken a sweltering turn. Veer Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit Savarkar rebutted Rahul Gandhi’s accusation. He countered it with a series of serious allegations against former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. As per reports, “Pandit Nehru had agreed to divide the country at the behest of a ‘woman’…Nehru had given the country’s secret information to the British for 12 years after independence.”
Condemning Pandit Nehru, Ranjit Savarkar claimed that “Pandit Nehru went alone to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, between May 9 and May 12, 1947, and resided there for four days. During that time it was said in Edwina’s letters to the British Government that I had invited Pandit Nehru as my guest.”
Further, he called attention to the things written in Edwina’s letter regarding their relations. Ranjit Savarkar said, “Pandit Nehru was very busy. So he was getting close to a ‘nervous breakdown’. He spent 4 days with me. Both of us (Edwina and Nehru) have become very good friends and this friendship will last for a long time.”
Ranjit Savarkar went ahead and said that Edwina had written in her letter that “Pandit Nehru has come under my ‘control’.”
Ranjit Savarkar further said that Pandit Nehru had made Lord Mountbatten the Viceroy by ignoring the security of the country. He said, “Balwant Singh had told that because of Mountbatten being the Viceroy, he could not send the army to Pakistan. 20,000 girls were kidnapped and taken to Pakistan. Seeing the carnage, the Indian leaders couldn’t understand what to do, so I took full control.”
Quoting Mountbatten, Ranjit Savarkar said, “The Viceroy wrote that after he left India, Nehru sent his reports to Mountbatten daily for 12 years.” Ranjit Savarkar even said that this is a big failure of the intelligence agencies and that Nehru was honey trapped.
FIR against Rahul Gandhi
The present ‘War of Attrition’ sparked after Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP from Wayanad mocked Veer Savarkar. He launched an offensive against the veteran freedom fighter waving a letter at a press conference at Maharashtra’s Akola. The alleged event took place during the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo yatra’ organized by the grand old party in Maharashtra.
Subsequently, a FIR was registered against Rahul Gandhi, by the grandson of Veer Savarkar, Shree Ranjit Savarkar and Rahul Shewale, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MP, at the Shivaji Park police station. The complaint alleged an offense of defamation under Section 500 & Section 501 of the Indian Penal Code.
Further another complaint has been filed as well, by another Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena leader Vandana Dongre. Rahul Gandhi had remarked that “Veer Savarkar, in a letter written to the British, said “Sir, I beg to remain your most obedient servant” and signed on it. Savarkar helped the British. He betrayed leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel by signing the letter out of fear.”
Veer Savarkar’s Legacy of Freedom Struggle
Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar started his political voyage as a high school student at the Fergusson College in Pune following the footsteps of another veteran freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Subsequently, he founded a secret society called Abhinav Bharat Society and also joined hands with organizations such as India House and the Free India Society.
Later, he published books proposing the complete Independence of India through a revolution. One of his works ‘The Indian War of Independence’ was banned by the British colonial authorities. Thereafter, Veer Savarkar was sentenced to life terms of imprisonment for fifty years and was kept at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
However, he was released in 1924 by British officials but he restarted his offensive against the British only after 1937. It was in the year 1938 that he became the president of the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Mumbai. Thereafter, he also served as the president of the Hindu Mahasabha and endorsed the idea of India as a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu Nation).
