Gujarat and Himachal Elections: Change is the only constant and the grand old Congress party seems to have personified the phrase. The party which used to rule the entire nation at one point of time but today the party finds it difficult to the Opposition benches. The upcoming state elections are approaching and it seems that the Congress party is in for a ruthless drubbing.
Rebels giving an edge to the BJP
Just before the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, several Congress leaders joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Chief Minister Jairam Thakur.
As per reports, Congress general secretary Dharampal Thakur, former secretary Akash Saini, former councillor Rajan Thakur, former district vice president Amit Mehta, Mehr Singh Kanwar, Youth Congress president Rahul Negi, Jai Maa Shakti Social Sansthan president Joginder Thakur, Naresh Verma, Chamyana ward member Yogendra Singh, taxi union member Rakesh Chauhan, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage Shimla president Dharmendra Kumar, Virendra Sharma, Rahul Rawat, Sonu Sharma, Arun Kumar, Shivam Kumar, and Gopal Thakur have joined the BJP ditching the grand old party.

The case of poll-bound Gujarat is no different and the Congress has suffered several blows there too. Mohansinh Rathva, 10-time MLA, has quit the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rathva is an influential figure in the tribal belt and his inclusion will enhance BJP’s prospects among the tribals who are around 15% in the state.
Veteran leader Bhaga Barad, an Ahir community leader had also joined BJP ahead of the assembly election. He was elected from the Talala seat in the Saurashtra region for the second time in 2017. More Senior Congress leaders like Himanshu Vyas have also jumped ship.
All these events are going to affect Congress, resulting in an edge for the BJP.
Irony with the Congress Party
Rahul Gandhi, the yuva leader of the Congress party is busy with Bharat Jodo Yatra. He is running across the country like Forrest Gump, to showcase the strength of his party. Meanwhile, his leaders from his own party, are joining the BJP almost on a daily basis and this proves Rahul Gandhi has failed to keep the party together and the much-hyped yatra is just another attempt to launch Rahul Gandhi.

This Bharat Jodo Yatra has avoided all those states where elections are due. Then what is the purpose of this rally? In Gujarat, Congress has not even shown a fighting spirit. Neither Rahul nor Priyanka did rallies in Gujarat, where they did pretty well, according to their performance, in previous elections. Even the Aam Aadmi Party is doing better than the Congress in the same state.
Himachal Pradesh too was not made part of the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Gandhi scions have not even visited the state, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had just one rally.
Maybe there could be only one reason for that, which is trusting the fact that Congress wins the state where Rahul Gandhi doesn’t visit. Like in the 2017 elections, Mr Gandhi didn’t visit Punjab, not even once and Congress won that election under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh.
Gujarat is already in the bag of the BJP and if everything goes well BJP will win Himachal too and they will change history as they did in Uttarakhand.
Normally, the opposition’s task is to up the game for the incumbent parties, however, with Congress, it seems that the grand old party is itself serving the state on a silver platter to the BJP.
