The Hemant Soren government is running on borrowed time. It was caught in multiple cases of irregularities and illegalities. The Soren Government wrongfully misconstrued itself above the law and ran the state as per its whims and fancies. However, the law is finally catching up to them. All the visible signs suggest that it will have an unceremonial exit from politics and the state will be freed from the stranglehold of the Sorens.
“Office of Profit” fit case for disqualification
Jharkhand politics is in for some major changes with the disqualification sword lurking over the head of several members of the Soren family. As per media reports, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sent its recommendation to Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais regarding the disqualification of JMM MLA Basant Soren. Reportedly, the Governor will officially announce the recommendation of the ECI over the disqualification issue, within a few days.

It was alleged that Basant Soren co-owned a mining firm with his brother Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Basant Soren did not disclose the mining lease in his election affidavit. These types of ‘illegal benefits’ are tantamount to the office of profit and if these claims are found to be true, Basant Soren is deemed to be disqualified from his assembly membership.
Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais had sought ECI’s recommendations to ascertain the facts of allegations levelled by several BJP leaders. The BJP leaders had sought Basant Soren’s disqualification from the State Assembly under Section 9A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (RPA). They had accused Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren of misusing power and illegally allotting a mining lease to themselves.
Deja vu moment for state politics
Just two weeks earlier, a similar development took place and ECI had recommended the Jharkhand Chief Minister’s disqualification under the same section (Section 9A). He was accused of misusing his position as Minister-in-Charge, Department of Mines & Geology. He allegedly allotted a stone mining lease to himself last year.

Apart from these, the Soren family is facing multiple cases of financial impropriety, fraud and money laundering. CM Soren, his brother Basant Soren, CM’s wife Kalpana Soren and Soren family’s close associates are facing legal troubles in multiple cases and all these cases are heading towards their conclusions adding more worries to the infamous and powerful Soren family.
Not just for office of profit, Dumka MLA Basant Soren has been accused of indulging in appeasement politics and letting the law and order of the state worsen. Apparently, two heinous cases of rape of Hindu girls emerged from his constituency but he was window-shopping undergarments in Delhi.

All these developments highlight that the troubles for the Soren family are only on the rise. They ran the state like there was no tomorrow and assumed that they are not accountable to the state or law forgetting that justice always prevails in the end. Now all their irregularities and frauds are coming to haunt them. There is a high possibility that the disqualification of CM Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren will end the Soren rule in the state once and for all.
