For the first time, classical Hindi will be used in a film. Ironically, it’s from Tamil industry

Ponniyin Selvan I: The American Film Industry got its name Hollywood from the place in which it was located. In fact, Hollywood is a district of Los Angeles, USA. Without applying logic or creativity, the Hindi film industry started recognising itself as BOLLYWOOD. Ironically, in the mad frenzy of riding the western bandwagon, Bollywood willfully side-lined Hindi. With decades of apathy towards Hindi, the very identity of the industry, the industry was hijacked by Urdu-English inflicted scriptwriters, directors and the production crew. All the feedback of Hindi and cinema lovers fell on deaf ears. But as they say, someone’s loss is another person’s gain.

Ponniyin Selvan: I

It seems that with the few successes, Southern regional cinema has realised the untapped potential in Hindi cinema industry and the scope of profit. Now they seem to come up with a solid plan to decimate the stranglehold of Bollywood cabal on Hindi Cinema industry. Evidently, the Hindi adaptation of Southern Historical drama film Ponniyin Selvan – 1 will be free of Urdu adulteration.

On 30th of September, the much-awaited Tamil film, Ponniyin Selvan – 1 made its theatrical release. The historical drama is directed by acclaimed director Mani Ratnam.

It is a cinematic adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s much-loved book. The thrilling novel was based on an important chapter in Tamil history. The multi starrer film sees Chiyan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi Sivakumar, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha Krishnan, Sobhita Dhulipala in the lead roles.

At the promotional event of the movie, Hindi dialogue writer Divya Prakash Dubey stated that his inspiration came from BR Chopra’s popular ‘Mahabharata’. Additionally, he emphasised that he wrote the script keeping in mind the popular dialogues of KGF and RRR. He categorically highlighted that Urdu was not used during that period. So, he has ensured to avoid the usage of Urdu to the minimum possible or even attempt to completely remove any trace of Urdu from the movie dialogues.

He stated that our effort is that after watching Ponniyin Selvan-I, a 20-year-old youth today receives some unfamiliar words and imbibes some words or dialogues in their popular culture.

He added that they tried to make the film in such a way that it did not look like TV serials. We could not catch the language from there, the youth should feel that they are reaching the tenth century after watching the Hindi film. How it has been done will be witnessed by watching the film.

These remarks by Divya Prakash Dubey matters a lot. Writers like Saleem-Javed have corrupted the Hindi Cinema industry with heavy or complete usage of Urdu and trampling the Hindi language.

Notably, there is a huge difference between Hindi and Urdu akin to the difference between fire and ice. A language must have its own roots, rules, dictionary, manuscript and grammar among other things. Apparently, Hindi fills all of the aforementioned traits.

Hindi in a way is the simpler pronunciation of Dev Bhasha Sanskrit. If analysed properly, it will make it easier to understand, recite and follow many other regional languages like Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi among others.

While Urdu is an amalgamation of other languages. In fact, do you know the meaning of ‘Urdu’? Urdu was the language of the cantonment. It means that Urdu was spoken by most of the (Turkish invaders) soldiers of that time.

It is the result of a half-baked mixture of Arabic, Persian, Khari Boli and Hindustani. To call it a language would be a grave insult to the language. As the most basic requirement of language is originality, which Urdu fails to possess at all.

The success of Hindi adaptation of Ponniyin Selvan-I will be a tight slap to the agenda driven Bollywood cabal who left no stone unturned in brutally stangulating the essence of Hindi Cinema Industry. They should not forget that one who can’t love his own mother tongue can’t love any other language and their profiteering from pushing agenda have been shredded to pieces by disgruntled audiences. So, if they don’t start tying the loose ends and shun their propaganda, Southern Cinema will keep expanding its presence till it rules the heart of every cinema lover.
