It seems to be a season of consecutive flop movies from Bollywood. Forget about making any profit, recent films are causing considerable losses to India’s most prominent theatre chains. The newly released Brahmastra is one such that has affected the theatres economically, instead of filling their pockets.
Theatre chains in loss due to Brahmastra
Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor starrer movie Brahmastra was released on 9th of September in a view to delight the fans. It created a huge buzz among the masses. But, it was reported that the mega theatre chains like PVR and INOX lost Rs 800 crore cumulatively as the response to the film was not up to the mark. However, while covering the shortcomings, this report was eventually dismissed by the CEO of PVR, Kamal Gianchandani.
The 410 crores movie collected less than 40 crores on its first day of release. Additionally, it also crashed the stock market coinciding with the release of Brahmastra. As reported by OpIndia, the PVR stocks were initially at a high of around Rs. 2,200 in the beginning of August, and opened at Rs. 1,942 on the movie’s release date at the NSE. But soon after the reviews of Brahmastra started knocking the media, the stocks crashed and reached to Rs. 1,829 at around 12 pm, falling by more than 5 percent.
On the other hand, INOX too reached a high in the first week of August and opened at Rs. 522 at the NSE on the release day. However, the share price fell by almost 5 percent and reached around Rs. 490 at around 12 pm. It is being analysed that the poor opening of Brahmastra is the reason for the fall in the share prices of multiplex chains.
Estimatedly, it will be hard time for the movie makers to recover a budget of 410 crores. Moreover, if the movie continues to flop in the coming weeks, then it will be an addition to the adready hard hit movies like Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, Anurag Kashyap directed Dobaaraa, Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera, among others.

Brahmastra is just another for Bollywood’s distress
Interestingly, fearing the Boycott trend, Bollywood did try to create vast swathes of PR campaigns for Brahmastra. Initially, various media portals predicted a bumper opening which was believed to surpass the opening week collection of RRR. However, the ground reality depicted an altogether a different approach.
‘Brahmastra’ was already stirring controversy for hurting religious sentiments. There was a scene in the trailer that displays Ranbir entering a temple wearing footwear. However, the director of the film, later clarified that it was a Durga puja pandal and not a temple.

Apart from this, a huge demand to boycott Brahmastra was also followed. It further infuriated the cimeagoers after the outrageous statement of Ranbir Kapoor that he loves eating beef, the director Ayan Mukerji became another reason for inviting the wrath. It was over his 2019 instagram post revealing that ‘Shiva’ was originally set to be called ‘Rumi’.
To put it simply, Bollywood is witnessing a hard time giving good films. The unfortunate reasons for it also includes the incessant increase of propaganda in the entertainment industry. And due to this, the flopping of movies have now initiated the phase of existential crisis for many theatre chains.
