Two days after India celebrated ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to mark the 75th year of independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Modi government, out of the blue, stepped in with the decision to provide Rohingya refugees apartments and police protection in the Bakkarwala area of Delhi. As per the reports, the decision was taken at a high-level meeting of the ministry of home affairs. However, what transpired later revealed a lot more about what is transpiring on the other side of the wall.
Hardeep Singh Puri’s tweet
On the 17th of August, Indians woke up to the news that set the political corridors abuzz. Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Union Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs, took to Twitter to inform about the reallocation of Refugees in Delhi. He informed that all Rohingya Refugees will be shifted to EWS flats in Bakkarwala area of Delhi and will be provided basic amenities, UNHCR IDs & round-the-clock @DelhiPolice protection.

He also added that India respects UN Refugee Convention 1951 & provides refuge to all, regardless of their race, religion or creed.

What the decision could have meant
According to the government’s estimate around 40,000 Rohingyas are illegally staying in India. Further, the high birth rate subject to their social vulnerability is increasing the population exponentially. The combination of a high population and no income make them vulnerable to crime and other illegal activities.
Various reports suggest the involvement of Rohingya Muslims in organized crime like drugs, human & cattle trafficking, prostitution, fake currency circulation, among others. Further, they are also very much associated with the local criminals in theft, murder, robbery, or kidnappings. After the recent Jahangirpuri and 2020 Delhi riots, the involvement of these religious bigots has also emerged. Many locals, on camera, have testified about their involvement in the Delhi riots.
The Government receives flak for the decision
Soon after the decision was made public, those who had high hopes from the government started slamming it for such double standards. The government was criticised for its stance on Rohingyas. People claimed that while Pakistani Hindus & Refugees are forced to live in sub-human conditions in various parts of the country, Rohingya illegal migrants who, in fact, are threat to National Security, are being provided Flats in Delhi. Various Twitter users called it a fall for the Modi govt and that they have ditched their core voter base.

HMO’s clarification is mindboggling
Just when we thought that the government has made its move and India will have to face the repercussion, another tweet surfaced on social media that took the political world by storm. The Twitter handle of Home Ministry put out a tweet which informed that Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has not given any directions to provide EWS flats to Rohingya illegal migrants at Bakkarwala in New Delhi.

It further claimed that Govt of Delhi proposed to shift the Rohingyas to a new location and MHA has already taken up the matter of their deportation with the concerned country through MEA.
The whole development has led people to bite their nails. One thing is clear that the government’s clarification is nothing but the result of people’s protest against the former’s decision to provide flats to Rohingya immigrants. There is a probability that the government opted for such a decision to please the UN, which of course is not so Modi style. In fact, it was two days back when he urged the nation to not seek validation from the West. The government needs to take lesson that if they, anyways, are on their way to step in with such a plan, it should ditch it now as it will not only ruin the party’s image but also affect its core voter base.
