Afghanistan has always been known as the graveyard of empires. History states the land has engulfed many empires in its soil since ancient times. As the invasion proved fatal for Russian forces, the US met the same fate in 2021 after 20 years of constant war against terrorism. With the concurrent collapse and overthrow of the American-backed Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in August last year, the Taliban reestablished their rule in the country.
After one year of Taliban control, it seems like Afghanistan has once again reached a brutal medieval age. Where women don’t have rights, children don’t have any future, and a government in power is a totally errant situation. The future of about 4 crore population is in a completely devastating situation. People have been forced to sleep, eat and die with the Islamic religion. One year after the takeover, the Islamist Terrorist Group, Taliban, has nothing to offer other than misery to the people.
Afghan Society Back to Medieval Time
After taking over Afghanistan, Taliban, the terrorist organization imposed harsh religious policies on social, economic, and political structures in Afghan society. The civil and political rights guaranteed under the earlier constitution have been revoked. Afghanistan’s governance policies are being molded according to extremist religious ideas.
The modern principles of a state are being butchered. Right, justice, life, and liberty are at the whims of terrorist groups who do not possess any accountability to the people. Individuals, civil societies, and the press have been restricted. The Ministry for the Promotion and Prevention of Vice has been established to prohibit social behavior which is un-Islamic.
Under Taliban rule, women’s right to existence has been snatched. Women are prohibited from going to school and prevented from working in public spheres. If women want to appear in public, they have to completely cover their bodies with black cloth and must be accompanied by a male member. Only religious education has been allowed for girl children.
Although extremist social religious policies have an aggravated impact on society as a whole but women are the ultimate sufferers. The thousand years of struggle for women’s rights have once again been butchered and progress made has been withheld. The Taliban is taking Afghan society back to medieval times, where people’s rights are laid before the edge of swords.
Economy On Death Bed
Before the takeover, the United States used to contribute about USD 8 billion per year as civilian and security aid to Afghanistan. This was about 40% of Afghanistan’s Gross Domestic Product. But the US’s withdrawal not only withheld this aid but other western countries also cut off their developmental contribution to Afghanistan.
Already hit by the Covid and US’s withdrawal, Afghanistan’s economy is in total dilapidated condition. The World Bank report suggests that since August 2021, the country’s economy has shrunk by 20% to 30%. Poverty and hunger are prevailing throughout the country. Thousands of people have left to neighboring countries for survival.
Although Afghanistan has a huge export base of goods like fruits, nuts, gemstones, and medical herbs but instruments to make money remained the same for Taliban. Afghanistan has traditionally been the center of the Opium Golden Crescent. Taliban has sustained its war against America through the illegal business of opium. The possibility of an institutionalized supply of opium cannot be ruled out considering its economic valuation in the world.
India’s Help to The People of Afghanistan
Although we support the democratic means of governance but realism rules international politics. In order to sustain its cordial relationship with the people of Afghanistan, India has constantly tried to supply essential food and medicinal products to them. Deviating from an earlier stance on Taliban, India is on a spree of help to the Afghani people.

In the continuing humanitarian assistance, India shipped 20,000 MTs of wheat, 13 tons of medicines, 5 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine, and other essential goods to Afghanistan. Further, other lots of medical and food grains assistance are in progress to follow.
Moreover, considering the historical and civilizational relationship with the Afghan people, India has sent a technical team to oversee the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
No matter how much aid or support the world provides to Afghanistan, until and unless the social and political conditions are not in line with modern principles, the state has little future. Afghanistan under the terrorist group will continue to live in the dark times in the modern world. The Afghan Society is returning to the medieval era where the rule of swords prevails.
