For the last few months, China has been shouting to the world that it wants India on board. However, the true measurement of someone’s intentions lies only in action. China is not even willing to consider Kashmir as legitimate Indian territory. There is no other reason to provide covert support to Pakistan opposing the G20 meeting in Kashmir.
China may not participate in G20
China has started dillydallying on attending the next G20 summit in India. The Communist nation has indicated that it may skip the Kashmir part of the summit next year. Additionally, Xi Jinping administration has restated that Kashmir is a legacy issue between India and Pakistan. Effectively China is not considering Kashmir as a sovereign and exclusive territory of India.
Laying out China’s position on Kashmir, Zhao Lijan, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry said, “China’s position on the Kashmir issue is consistent and clear-cut. The Kashmir issue, a dispute left from the past, should be peacefully and properly addressed in accordance with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement,…”
When Zhao was asked whether China will be attending the G20 meeting in 2023, Zhao replied, “We will look at whether China will attend the meeting.”
Pakistan is trying to galvanise G20 in its favour
Though, Zhao did not explicitly said it, but the chances are that the China may skip all important G20 meeting in 2023. India will be hosting it next year and initially no country objected to it. But when India declared that a part of the meeting will be conducted in Kashmir as well, objections started to be raised. On its part, Pakistan launched a diplomatic offensive by asking G20 countries to boycott the meeting. On bilateral level, it asked China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia for help. All 3 are members of the G20 club.
While, there has been no official response from G20 and countries like Saudi and Turkey, China found it apt to support Pakistan. That is so because, China has too much stake in Pakistan. It’s CPEC project is one of the biggest in Asian continent and recently it has come under huge risk. Chinese people are being killed by terrorists, its money has become tough to recover and many other issues are hampering the development of the project.

China and Pakistan can’t make a difference
China is tightening its noose on Pakistan by reducing its capital investment. However, China wants to ensure that at least its investment turns out to be profitable and that is why it can’t afford to antagonise its vassal state.
There is absolutely no logical sense in opposing any kind of India’s initiative in Kashmir. Kashmir was, is and will be an integral part of India. If Article 370 could not make a difference, I do not know why China and Pakistan think that they can?
