Just as in Mahabharat, the name Drapaudi is derived from Drapada which means “pillar”, the newly elected President of India is set to be one such pillar of constitutional strength for the masses. It is perhaps this vigorous personality of Draupadi Murmu, that led to the opposition’s defeat.
The welcoming of Madam President
The world’s largest democracy has now recorded its second woman President of the country, after Pratibha Patil from 2007- 12. Recently, Draupadi Murmu, the NDA’s candidate won the Presidential elections by defeating the opposition’s candidate Yashwant Sinha.
According to the Election Commission, over 99 per cent of the total electors cast their ballot in the Presidential polls. A total of 4,809 electors, which comprises 776 MPs and 4,033 elected MLAs, were entitled to vote in the election.
The 15th President of India is the first ever person with a tribal background to attain this responsibility. She already holds immense experience in politics and governance, having occupied positions as a legislator, governor, and minister. Given her life challenges, she stood inspirational, right from being a Santhal woman to her exemplary rise in politics. It is her varied spectrum of intellect that let her become the next Madam President of India.
It was already after the third phase of Presidential voting when PC Mody, the Returning officer declared Murmu’s winning with over 53 per cent of the total valid votes. After four rounds of polling, Murmu received 2,824 votes of 6,76,803 value. On the other hand, the opposition’s Sinha received 1,877 votes of 3,80,177 value.
In the aftermath of this thrashing defeat, the opposition got stuck with their lowered morale, resulting in its decision of withdrawing from the vice presidential candidature.

Opposition’s withdrawal from Vice President elections clears the way for Jagdeep Dhankhar
This is not the first time that BJP stood above all with its exemplary victory. It’s been quite a long time now that the opposition is looming under existential crisis. From contesting individually to unitedly, it has tried all possible tactics. But, is unable to understand that it’s a 21st century India, that will no longer tolerate the masquerading of left-liberal cabals.
Nevertheless, it’s never too late to realize the mistake. Moving on the same lines, finally, the opposition has accepted its defeat. This came after a recent decision by the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declaring her abstaining from the upcoming Vice presidential polls. With the TMC stepping away from the elections, it can be evident that the opposition’s unity will have to counter a huge jolt, as their unity was the only last resort for them.
It appears the NDA’s choice of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate for the post of Vice President has hit the nail on the TMC’s head, causing the party supremo Mamata Banerjee to lose all sense of rationale.
Amid the legacy of shedding its own faults, the TMC accused Congress for its withdrawal from the joint opposition efforts. TMC further criticized the dynasty party for supporting the former Congress member Margaret Alva as their vice presidential nominee, paving the path to victory for Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Apparently, the opposition has accepted its failure and thus gradually got into a dilapidated state. It will not be wrong to say that the Indian political structure will soon become opposition less, given its current tumbledown state.
The Vice Presidentialship
The upcoming Vice Presidential elections are scheduled to be conducted on 6 August, under Article 66 of the Indian constitution. The candidate gets elected indirectly by the electoral college which consists of all the elected members of both houses of the Parliament. The election is held in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote system.
For the 16th Vice Presidential election of the year 2022, the electoral college comprises 233 elected members of Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members of Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of Lok Sabha. To put it simply, the electoral College comprises a total of 788 members from both Houses of Parliament.
To mark the triumph in the vice chairman elections, it is imperative for the contestants to secure a majority in the electoral college. However, the number is huge for the opposition to tap. Apparently, they were able to predict their tattered situation, (which could knock on their doors in the future), given the results of the recent Presidential post.
The dilapidated opposition
Frankly, the opposition is on the verge of a total decline, and that can be substantiated by their rigorous recent declarations. Probably, they have realized that now, even their political rant is not working to their advantage. Firstly, their defeat in the Presidential elections and then their deliberate removal from occupying the vice chair is evidence of the former fact.
Apparently, their intense level of defeat in the recent elections has impacted their psychological system and without any formalities, they withdrew their candidature. The newly elected president has not even taken her oath, and the opposition has already been backfoot with the historic legacy of instant action.
Evidently, PM Modi’s incessant popularity with his developmental policies has left the opposition ripped under the saffron party’s prevalence.
