The increasing use of automation and Artificial Intelligence in every aspect of life has brought transformational changes in working. Installation of intelligence in machines through programming has enhanced the efficiency of work and has significantly reduced the chances of error. Involvement of humans in repetitive functioning of work provides the chances of dissimilarity and increases the chance of some error, the Artificial Intelligence has provided flawless solutions to these problems. Due to the effectiveness of the work, the Indian Air Force has now decided to integrate its functioning with Artificial bits of intelligence.
AI Center of Excellence launched by IAF
On 10 July 2022 at Air Force Station Rajokri, New Delhi, Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS), inaugurated the Indian Air Force Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI COE) under the aegis of Unit for Digitisation, Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Application Networking.
Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, addressing the gathering, said that “IAF has taken proactive steps to embed Industry 4.0 and Al-based technologies in its war-fighting processes. The AI COE with high-end computers and big data storage capabilities, coupled with full-spectrum Al software suites, would substantially enhance the operational capability of IAF”.
The Al-based applications are being developed with inhouse expertise in coordination with various Public Sector Units, Medium Small Micro Enterprises and leading academia in the field of Artificial Intelligence, the Air Marshal added.
A Big Data Analytics and Al Platform has been commissioned in the IAF’s Al Center, for handling all aspects of Analytics, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Neural Networks and Deep Learning algorithms. The high-end compute requirements would be undertaken by the latest Graphical Processing Unit-powered servers, the press brief by the Ministry of Defence said.
Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Air Force Operations
On July 11, 2022, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh launched 75 newly-developed Artificial Intelligence (AI) products and technologies during the first-ever ‘AI in Defense symposium. The aim is to integrate every military operation with Artificial Intelligence and multiply the effectiveness of defence capabilities.
Girish Linganna talking about the use of AI in aerial combat said, “In aerial combat, AI shall not replace human operators, but rather aid them; taking over simpler tasks and freeing the pilot’s headspace for more complex decision-making”.
The integration of AI in Air Force operations will act as a force multiplier. The use of AI in command, control, communication, and computer in combat operations will provide the fighter jets with effective and errorless data. This accuracy in data will enhance the quality of surveillance and reconnaissance further improving the lethality of strikes. Automatic weapon launching systems will enhance the target capabilities and will reduce the reaction time of the pilot.

AI-enabled and AI-led applications in fighter jets will provide the stimulated data from various sources of information like Satellites and Radars. The communication and information stimulation will enhance the reflexive capabilities of fighter jets increasing the accuracy of targets. Modernization of the Air Force through Artificial Intelligence and Automation will prove to be a game changer and will exponentially increase the capabilities of the Air Force.
