There is a saying that ‘you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time’. This saying holds true on the so-called crusader against Corruption. The Anna Hazare led anti-corruption movement ‘India against corruption’ gave birth to a political outfit called AAP, whose leaders and members, ironically, have been found neck deep in charges of Corruption.
Lieutenant Governor in action
The overly-exaggerated and heavily advertised ‘Delhi Model’ got a free pass because of the inactions of earlier administrators of Delhi, Najeeb Jung and Anil Baijal. Both of the earlier Lieutenant Governors did not act tough against the ‘corrupt’ practices of the Arvind Kejriwal government. But things changed quickly after the new LG Vinai Kumar Saxena took charge on 26 May 2022.

Within a span of just 26 days he has taken actions in two different cases pertaining to corruption by officials of the Delhi government. Acting tough against corruption he has suspended three officials in Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office over corruption charges. The Lt. Governor suspended Prakash Chandra Thakur, deputy secretary in the CM Office and two Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) over alleged corruption.

The two suspended SDMs are Vasant Vihar SDM Harshit Jain, and Vivek Vihar SDM Devender Sharma. According to officials in the L-G office, the cases pertain to corruption involving government land allegedly sold to private entities.
According to a statement by the LG office, disciplinary proceedings were ordered against the suspended officials. Just two days prior to this stern action two Assistant Engineers (AE) of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) were suspended. The L-G had found lapses in the construction of flats built for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in Kalkaji Extension.
These decisive actions demonstrate the Zero-tolerance policy of the new Delhi L-G and are giving nightmares to the corrupt officials.
AAP backs ‘Corruption’ and the blame game
As usual, the AAP government has indulged in deflecting and shielding corrupt officials. Speaking on the L-G’s actions against corruption, the Deputy CM Manish Sisodia accused the new L-G of ‘Trying to favour BJP by bulldozing the law’. He wrote a letter to the L-G accusing him of trying to stop construction of hospitals and asked the LG to withdraw his permission for a probe by ACB.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia wrote to L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena terming his nod to the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) to probe corruption allegations against Public Works Department (PWD) officials for construction of seven temporary hospitals was not in accordance with the law.

It is ironic that the party which projected itself as the crusader against corruption is crying foul on tough actions against corrupt officials. Now that the things are changing in Delhi under the decisive guidance of LG Vinai Saxena, things may get ugly as the AAP has been notorious in shifting blames, crying like hyenas and blaming PM Modi for not letting the Delhi government function. But the back to back action against corruption has highlighted that the capital may have not gotten a ‘Nayak’ CM but is definitely witnessing LG working like one.
