Sanjana Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor’s daughter has taken on the task of nurturing her grandfather’s ambition, The Prithvi Theatre Group. Her first role was in the 1981 film 36 Chowringhee Lane, which was directed by her father and starred her mother Jennifer Kendal. Her character was a younger version of the one played by her mother. She next starred in Utsav (1984), another film produced by her father, and in Hero Hiralal (1989), her first main part in a Bollywood film, which was a box office triumph.
In 1988, she starred in Mira Nair’s critically praised film Salaam Bombay, but she has since stopped starring in films, focusing instead on theatre in the 1990s.
Sanjana Kapoor played the Japanese wife in Akira Kurosawa’s immortalized film Rashomon, based on the Broadway play by Fay and Michael Kanin, in a stage production in 1991. She has also appeared in Aranyaka, directed by A.K. Bir (1994).
For three and a half years, she hosted the Amul India Show on television.
She taught drama classes for children at the Prithvi Theatre in Juhu, Mumbai, until 2011.
She announced her departure from Prithvi Theatre in 2011, and in 2012, she founded Junoon Theatre, an arts company that will work with traveling ensembles to stage plays in smaller venues across India.

Sanjna Kapoor is a Kapoor family member. Prithviraj Kapoor was her paternal grandpa, and Raj and Shammi Kapoor were her paternal uncles. Kunal and Karan Kapoor, her brothers, have also appeared in films. Geoffrey and Laura Kendal, her maternal grandparents, were actors who travelled to India and Asia with their Shakespeareana theatre group, presenting Shakespeare and Shaw. Shakespeare Wallah, a Merchant Ivory film partially based on the family, starred her father and her aunt, actress Felicity Kendal. Sanjana went to Mumbai’s Bombay International School.

Married Life of Sanjana Kapoor
Sanjana Kapoor has had two marriages. Her first husband was Aditya Bhattacharya, son of filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya and Rinki Bhattacharya (known for Mandi and Raakh) (daughter of noted filmmaker Bimal Roy).
Kapoor later married Valmik Thapar, the son of journalist Romesh Thapar, a tiger conservationist. Romila Thapar, a JNU historian, has a nephew named Valmik (sister of Romesh Thapar). Sanjana and Valmik have a son, Hamir Thapar, together.
Awards
In 2020, Sanjna Kapoor received the French honour of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) for her remarkable contribution to theatre.
