Several videos were floating around the media that displayed people donning the Islamic skullcap, spitting on food being prepared by them or in close proximity to them. Earlier this month, a seven-second video of a Muslim eatery worker from Loni, Ghaziabad, went viral that showed a man spitting on food. However, a Christian group in Kerala has taken the responsibility to counter “Thook Jihad.”
Kerala Christians against “Thook Jihad”
In a move to express the resentment, Christian groups in Kerala reportedly launched a campaign to identify hotels that served “spit-free food”. Sharing the lists of Kerala hotels offering spit- free food on social media pages of Christian groups such as ‘Soldiers of Cross’, they advised people to visit only these hotels.
In the lists being widely circulated on Facebook, Whatsapp groups, and other social media platforms, Kerala Christians are insisting others of preferring restaurants following higher standards of hygiene practices rather than those serving spit food.
“Thook Jihad” exists
The video shows a skullcap-wearing worker at a ‘Muslim hotel’ baking chapatis in a tandoor and a worker spitting on the chapatis. On November 8, another video of Muslims spitting on food went viral on social media. A leftist publication called Alt News fact-checked a separate video and found it to be of 2018, even though people in it were wearing masks – indicating that the video was indeed recent. Also, Alt News claimed that the Muslim man in question was not spitting on the food, but was merely blowing air on it for good fortune to those who consume it.

In another instance, the Ghaziabad police arrested Mohammad Mohsin after a video went viral that displayed him making Rotis while spitting on them at an engagement ceremony. The incident purportedly took place on March 11 in the Bhojpur area of Ghaziabad district.
In addition to that, Delhi Police arrested two people named Mohammad Ibrahim and Anwar. In a viral video, both of them were seen applying saliva on the dough of the Rotis.
Earlier in 2020, there had been several reports and rumours of Muslim vegetable vendors spitting or urinating on vegetables and in some cases they had even been caught and a public spectacle was made out of the situation.
According to Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 513, spitting to your left is a way to be safe from bad dreams. According to Sahih al-Bukhari: Volume 3, Book 59, Number 428, the prophet also spat on the food of his disciples. Therefore, it is hard to believe that Muslims merely blow air over food to bring good fortune.
In India, this practice is fast being weaponised by Islamists, and unsuspecting individuals from all other faiths are unawaringly becoming victims of this type of Jihad. But, over the past few years, a few Christian groups have awakened against the Muslim propaganda, especially after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) began campaigning against vicious ‘Love jihad’.
It seems like Kerala Christians have indeed come up with a unique way to counter Islamists’ “Thook Jihad”
