A month after recusing himself from the terror of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Justice Chanda is now appointed as a permanent judge in Calcutta HC. Followed by this decision five-judge Bench of Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal government to hand over complaints of post-poll violence to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The central agency will investigate the allegations of murder, rape and unnatural deaths in the state. Seems like dark days are approaching for Mamata.
BREAKING: All allegations of rape and murder in post poll #bengalviolence will be probed by CBI while rest of the allegations will be probed by SIT.
(PS: An Editor was humiliated for tweeting allegations of rape in #Bengal after results. Just saying.)

Justice Kaushik Chanda was initially hearing Mamata Banerjee’s petition against the West Bengal Assembly election result in Nandigram, but Mamata had objected to her petition being heard by Justice Chanda, alleging the bench could be biased against her. After the first hearing, Mamata led TMC to tweet pictures of Justice Chanda at various BJP events to establish his proximity to the saffron party. Mamata Banerjee’s lawyer Sanjay Basu asked for the matter to be transferred out of Justice Chanda’s court.
Justice Chanda, despite being a Judge, like any other citizen of the country, also exercises his voting rights in favour of a political party, but he lays aside his predilection while deciding. He later recused from the case but imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Mamata Banerjee for how she levelled a charge against the Calcutta High Court judge.

The reign of terror in West Bengal under the stewardship of Mamata Banerjee shows no sign of abating. Controversy and suspicion are bound to arise and have a detrimental effect on centre-state relations, as West Bengal Chief ministers didn’t provide the general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to exercise its authority in the state. But seems like things are finally moving in the right direction after Justice Chanda bagged a permanent seat, and Calcutta HC ordered a CBI probe into Bengal post-poll violence. This decision of the Supreme court comes as the biggest setback to the TMC.

Mamata’s fear and hesitance towards the CBI probe and Justice Chanda’s investigation is legitimate for her, as her concern lies in the fact that they might expose the TMC ‘reign of terror’ and dirty politics. Political killings, lynchings and bombings are very common occurrences in West Bengal. A moment of silence for Mamata as it seems like the tables have finally turned after the Judiciary’s remarkable decision.
