In a statement displaying pure political hypocrisy and reeking of irony, Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, Robert Vadra, has come out to state that that the probe against him is based on ‘vendetta politics’. This comes after the Income Tax Department officers on Monday recorded Vadra’s statement in connection with its investigation against him under the Benami assets law and he has been sympathising towards the protesting farmers ever since.
Truly a classic demonstration of how the Gandhi family can milk an issue for their vested interests, Robert Vadra now hopes to use the farmers’ issue to get out of the money laundering charges against him.
He said, “Everybody knows this is political vendetta. If Priyanka goes out to help the farmers and all the issues of the government, who else are they going to come to? They are going to come to Robert Vadra.”

He further continued, “It is certain that since farmer issues are involved, they (centre) want to find other issues to digress away from the real issues. This is going on for a decade. I am answering all questions of various agencies. I have nothing to hide. The truth will prevail.”
The Income Tax Department officers had gone to Vadra’s residence to record his statement under the provisions of the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act. The investigation is on-going relating to charges of possession of undisclosed assets in the United Kingdom.
Apart from this, Enforcement Directorate is also probing Robert Vadra under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, on allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square, worth GBP 1.9 million. In light of these irregularities, Vadra is currently out on anticipatory bail.

Robert Vadra’s penchant of accusing the government of “diverting issues” whenever he is under the radar for his illegalities have been going on for quite some time. Back in 2018, when he was booked in a land scam in Gurgaon, along with former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, he said, “Election season, increase in oil prices… So let’s divert real people’s issues with my decade-old issue. What’s new?”
The accusation was relating to land deals in Manesar, Naurangpur and Lakhnoula villages of Gurgaon, alleging a scam of Rs 1,500 crore. It is pertinent to note that at the time of these land deals, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda was in power.

It certainly is curious how despite being involved in money laundering and cheating farmers in Haryana, the Gandhi son-in-law is now purporting to support the protesting farmers. While it is very easy to state that the Gandhi family is being targeted because they are supporting the farmers, one wonders why this same sense of selflessness and sympathy wasn’t extended when the land was being usurped from these very farmers.
Robert Vadra can cry foul and tarnish as many democratic institutions and agencies as he likes, the only question remains, where had his sense of supporting the farmers disappeared when the alleged land scams in Haryana were being committed?
