Much has been written about the paranoia of the Chinese Communist Party as it has made a name for itself to deal with the dissenters and the naysayers in the most brutal manner possible. From mysterious disappearances to forced cultural change to organ harvesting, the CCP has done it all. Just when we think that the CCP can’t commit further atrocities, it tends to surprise the world as a Chinese doctor was forced to leave his motherland for the crime of performing his duty and treating patients. Unfortunately for the doctor, the patients were human rights lawyers who openly challenged the CCP’s atrocities which forced the doctor to flee China as the CCP began its brutal crackdown.
In a heart-wrenching story, NTD reveals how Dr Zhao Zhongyuan who is a Chinese medicinal doctor with a well-established clinic in Beijing, was forced to flee China for the crime of performing his duties. The human rights lawyers treated by Dr Zhao have defended various people who bore the brunt of the CCP’s brutality including the Falun Gong. For the uninitiated, various experts have claimed that the Chinese government is harvesting and selling organs of the members of the spiritual sect Falun Gong.
A heart-wrenching account from a former Falun Gong prisoner exposes the sheer brutality with which such crimes against humanity were committed in China. He told the Guardian, “after about a month in the camp, everyone was handcuffed and put in a van and taken to a huge hospital. That was for a more thorough physical check-up. We were given X-rays. On the third occasion in the camp, they were drawing blood from us. We were all told to line up in the corridor and the test was given.” As per such reports, political prisoners, including Falun Gong practitioners, who the Communist Party of China sees as a threat to their rule, are being subjected to supposedly on-demand execution in order to provide organs to recipients.

Due to the lawyers’ quest for truth and justice, the lawyers became the prime target of the CCP government in China. In 2014, when four lawyers visited a detention centre to seek the release of Falun Gong members who were illegally detained, the lawyers were arrested and tortured. Dr Zhao treated the lawyers who had multiple injuries including broken ribs.
The CCP’s paranoia knows no bounds as in 2015, it interrogated over 300 human rights lawyers, some oh whom saw their licenses cancelled and sent to jail. One such lawyer was Lee, who suffered serious leg injuries and was treated by Dr Zhao as Lee was forced to stand in military position for three months. Zhao claims that the Chinese officials completely controlled Lee’s life and followed him everywhere. Lee couldn’t even scratch his face without explicit permission from the officials monitoring him.
Zhao who has treated various human rights lawyers saw them being the subject of sleep deprivation and forced medication which severely weakened them. There are very few human rights lawyers left in China after 2015 crackdown and even fewer willing to further pursue their profession. Zhao interacted and treated with a bunch of the lawyers upon their release which caught the eye of the Chinese authorities which led to the authorities closely monitoring his clinic while the police repeatedly harassed Zhao.
The Chinese government even suspended the license of Zhao’s clinic and last year, was interrogated after the authorities learnt that a lawyer went to Zhao to seek treatment. Zhao was handcuffed and kept in a dark room for three hours which prompted him and his wife to escape to Canada. Unfortunately, Zhao had to leave behind his sister and 94-year-old mother behind in China.
Dr Zhao is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg and it will not be far-fetched to say that Chinese whistleblowers like Dr Wenliang who sought to alarm the world about the impending disaster were allowed to die and refused treatment.
