Everyone who thought that the issue of Love Jihad is a mere figment of imagination, this news will come as nothing less than a rude jolt for them. Recently the vice chairman of National Commission for Minorities George Kurian wrote a letter to Amit Shah, apprising of the grave situation in Kerala, where allegedly Christian girls are being forced to convert to Islam. For this, he has given the reference of A love jihad rate card and a recent case that occurred in Kozhikode.
The case to which George Kurian referred actually occurred in Kozhikode district of Kerala, where a Christian man complained to the police that her daughter is being forced to convert to Islam. In his complaint, the man wrote, “My daughter was sexually assaulted by Fazal [accused] and took objectionable pictures of her. Since then he has been blackmailing my daughter with those pictures.”
George Kurian referred to some other cases as well as he wrote the letter to Home Minister. According to the letter, when the girl refused to budge, an attempt to abduct her also occurred in Kozhikode. Another Malayali Christian girl was abducted from Delhi, and her parents are unable to locate her since then.
Apart from the cases, George Kurian also mentioned the reports of the Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance as appointed by Kerala’s Catholic Bishops Conference. To quote an extract from the letter, “It is learnt from the Commission’s magazine ‘Jagrutha’ that over 4000 girls were involved in religious conversions after falling in love. It is also said that most of these are condemned to sexual exploitation and maltreatment for many years to come. Also, according to an India Today report based on the same findings and published in 2009, 2600 Christian women had converted to Islam.”
George Kurian also put forward his concern about the brainwashing of such girls, who are also used as couriers for terror related activities. He has mentioned in his letter that such incidents could ruin the communal harmony in Kerala. As such, George Kurian has requested Amit Shah to look into the matter as soon as possible and conduct an impartial NIA inquiry into the same.
Such cases of Love Jihad have been in the limelight before as well, especially in states like Kerala. It is now learnt through George Kuriyan’s letter that forget Hindu and Sikh girls, now even Christian girls aren’t spared from this pogrom, which is seriously a matter of concern.
Kerala is now revealing itself as a prominent hub for Love Jihad, and what better case to prove than that of the homeopathic doctor Akhila. She married Shafin Jahan, a PFI activist, and converted herself to Islam, keeping a new name Hadia for herself. Since PFI is notorious for radicalism and conversion through deceit, her father KM Ashokan was forced to knock the doors of legal courts for justice. Though Kerala High Court gave him some relief by annulling the marriage, the Supreme Court restored the marriage, nullifying the earlier decision by the Kerala High Court.
However, Hadia is just one example. The way Love Jihad has gripped Kerala can be explained by a special report compiled by Times Now a couple of years ago. A reporter of Times Now had visited the notorious district of Kasargod in this respect, which had become an ISIS hub thanks to the 10 years of Congress – CPI(M) rule. According to the report, the Muslim boys of this region are openly offered to convert any Hindu, Sikh or Christian girl by deceit and be rewarded with a fixed monetary prize. This is the most for Sikh girls, and the least for Buddhist girls.
According to the investigations done by the channel, Love Jihad has now developed into a fully fledged industry in Kerala. For this, many Muslim boys even change their names. Once a girl falls into their trap, she has no option of turning back. According to the same report, in Kerala alone more than 6000 people have been converted to Islam, of which half are women, and of whom 76% are in the age category of below 35.
This is not all, according to this report a rate card for the conversion was circulated in Kerala. The accused would also be assisted by all means through special helpline numbers. If a Muslim boy from Kerala manages to lure a non Muslim girl from another state, he would be rewarded likewise. The Love Jihad rate card list, as accessed by Times Now, looks somewhat like this –

- Buddhist Girl – 1.5 lakh rupees

However, this problem is just not limited to Kerala, but also extends to states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc. If some are lucky like Tara Shahdeo to come out of the mess and narrate their ordeal, there are several Hadiyas and Khushi Parihars [later Zara Sheikh], who don’t have the fortune of having such an opportunity either. Now the letter by George Kurian reveals the seriousness of the situation to a great extent and we hope that Amit Shah takes due cognizance of this situation and destroys the menace of Love Jihad from the root itself.
